Biography

Cornelius Van Egmont was born in 1598 in Voorhout, Teylingen, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands. His parents were Seger Cornelisse Van Egmont and Trintje van Egmont.

Cornelius married Brechtje Van Egmond; Claes Cornelise Van Egmont; Lysbeth Cornelisse Van Egmont; Seger Cornelissen van Egmont; Huijbertje van Egmont; Jannetje Schermerhorn (Van Egmont); Neeltje Cornelis van Egmond; Lysbet Van der Bergh (Van Voorhout).

He died in 1678 in Castle Island, Albany, New York, American Colonies and was buried in Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands, Albany, New York, United States.

He is said to be descended from the Egmond Family that played an important role in the Netherlands during the Middle Ages, and was traced their descent from the Pagan kings. Their chateau was on the North Sea, about three miles west of Alkmaar, and from 1423 to 1558, they were at the height of their power. Pre-eminent among all of the Egmonts was Lamoral, Count of Egmont, Prince of Gavre (1522-1568), "one of the most brilliant characters in history", one historian records. He was a general and statesman in the Spanish Netherlands just before the start of the Eighty Years' War whose execution helped spark the national uprising that eventually led to the independence of the Netherlands. The Egmond or Egmont family is named after the Dutch town of Egmond, province of Noord Holland.

He sailed for New Netherland in September 1643. by "Het Wapen Van Rensselaerwyck", with his family. He engaged as a farmer and was one of the first farmers of consequence in Rensselaerwyck, nearly all of the others at this time being for traders. He took the farm formerly occupied by Brant Peelen, deceased, which was one of the two farms on Castle Island, near Albany. ∼
He made a contract with Patroon Van Rensselaer on August 23, 1643, and in this document he is referred to as Cornelis Sergerse Egmont. he sailed for New Netherland in September 1643, by "Het Wapen Van Rensselaerwyck", with his wife, Bregtje Jacobsen, 45 years old, and 6 children. He was almost 44 years of age. His children were Cornelis, 22; Claes, 20; Serger, 14; Lysbeth, 16; Jannetje, 10; and Neelje, 8. He was engaged as a farmer and was one of the first farmers of consequence in Rensselaerwyck, nearly all of the others at this time being for traders. He took the farm formerly occupied by Brant Peelen, deceased, which was one of the two farms on Castle Island, near Albany. In 1646, he took over from Adrian Vanderdonck the other farm for the remaining 3 years of its lease, and thus came into possession of the entire island. In 1651, an inventory of the farm of Cornelis Sergerse Egmont showed that he was the owner of 13 horses and 22 cows, and that the farm contained 70 morgens, and the rent was 1210 guilders. This farm was called Welysburg. From 1657 to 1660 Cornelis Sergerse Egmont was the owner of a lot in Albany on the east side of North Pearl Street, between Steuben and Maiden Lane. On December 10, 1660, he conveyed Gerrit Slichtenhorst a house and lot in Albany, probably the one above referred to.
