GEDCOM Note

≤p>Darkas: The Ever Eluding Cherokee≤/p>≤p>One of the most interesting people hidden among the branches of my tree is a lady by the name of Darkas, aka Granny Dark or Granny Black. She is my third great grandmother. She was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian. Darkas was born about 1811. Her father was said to be Nettle-Carry. Darkas was interned to the ROBERTS family. The same family that breed the Governor of Tennessee. Jesse ROBERTS fathered her a child named Sarah Jane. Sarah Jane married John WINNINGHAM, son of Soloman WINNINGHAM and grandson of Richard WINNINGHAM, brother to Adam, and one of the early settlers of Overton County. A few years later Darkas married Michael CRAVENS, my third great grandfather. Very little is known about the life of Michael, except for children. One of the offspring's of this union was Nancy Jane (CRAVENS) SELLS. You may remember the name from an earlier issue. She was mutilated by her daughter. Darkas lied to the Government in the 1820's-1830's by telling them she was Black Dutch. She did this to keep from being taken to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears. Some of the other Darkas stories I have written down from various family members are that she used tolike to come up behind children and scare them. She would spend much time in the woods. That story poses some questions. She was an indentured servant for years and the Cherokee were a "civilized" tribe. She also had children. So why would she live in the woods? After Michael died, Darkas moved in with her daughter Mahala (Haly) WINNINGHAM, the first wife of Seth WINNINGHAM, and her grandchildren. According to the 1880 Overton County census, Darkas's parents were from North Carolina. Two or three pictures exist of Darkas, including the one above. Darkas's children were as follows: Joseph Peter CRAVENS m. Nancy Jane THREET, Susie CRAVENS m. Dee THREET and then married Thomas Logan SELLS, Haley Pearl CRAVENS m. Seth WINNINGHAM, Margaret CRAVENS died young, Nancy Jane CRAVENS m. Henry SELLS,and Mary Emeline CRAVENS m. David WINNINGHAM. Pictures have been uncovered of Haley, Susie, and Emeline.≤/p>If anyone has anything to add, please drop me a line.
