About Diederik II van Kleef Valkenburg

Dirk II of Valkenburg ( 1221 - Cologne , October 15, 1268 ) was a 13th-century knight from the noble House of Valkenburg-Heinsberg . He was among others lord of Valkenburg and Monschau.

Although Dirk II is known as lord of Valkenburg , it should be noted that between 1226 and 1236 his mother Beatrix van Kyrberg-Daun acted not just as guardian, but as lady of Valkenburg.

Dirk was arbitrator between Hendrik van Gelder , the elected bishop of Liège , and Duke Henry II of Brabant . He supported the population of Cologne against Archbishop Koenraad van Hochstaden . Archbishop Conrad's family had imprisoned Herman the Red from the Kleingedank family in 1257 . The Kleingedank family sought retribution from the archbishop for this. He fled the city, but then attacked the city with his army. Dirk led the Cologne bourgeoisie against the archbishop. The two armies met at Frechen and the archbishop had to withdraw with heavy losses.

On October 9, 1261, Dirk's brother Engelbert was elected Archbishop of Cologne. Relations between Archbishop and Cologne bourgeoisie would be just as hostile under Archbishop Engelbert as under his predecessor. Dirk now sided with his brother. After Engelbert's defeat at the Battle of Zülpich, he was held prisoner for three years in Nideggen castle by William of Gulik . Led by Roman King Richard of Cornwall , Dirk attacked Cologne in 1268, supported by Walram IV of Limburg , Dirk II of Heinsberg and Diederik VII of Cleves. The city was under siege but managed to withstand all storms. When Dirk tried to penetrate the city through a tunnel dug under the city wall with a group of knights, he was spotted in time and was killed in the ensuing fighting.
