About Edgar Wilson Wigwassibikwe Shawano

Edgar Wilson Shawano (Shawanoo) is # 674 on the 1907 Wooster Roll where he is identified as the son of Mrs. Amanda Shawano # 670. Edgar's father, Cornelius Shawanoo, is not named on the 1907 Wooster Roll but appears with his wife and children in the 1911 Canada census for Kettle Point.

Edgar's traditional name is recorded by Wooster as "Wigwassibikwe" meaning "Grindstone" but that is an inaccurate translation since the name is a female form (which never would be a boy's name) and since the Anishinaabemowin word for Grindstone is "Jiwanabik" (Baraga 1878:121), not "Wigwassibikwe". The standard word in Anishinaabemowin for "birchbark" is "Wigwass" (Baraga 1878:28) and the standard word for "river" is "sibi" (Baraga 1878:214). Wigwassibikwe actually means "Birchbark river woman", the approximate translation for Lottie Ellen Shawanago's traditional name, not her brother Edgar's traditional name. WOOSTER HAS MIXED UP THE TRANSLATIONS FOR THE TRADITIONAL NAMES OF AMANDA SHAWANO'S CHIDREN. The traditional names for all of Amanda's children and their meanings require scrutiny and comment by those with expertise in nuances of the Anishinaabemowin language and Potawatomi culture. More research is required on Wooster's reported names for this family before the incorrect information is copied elsewhere.

In 1907 when Edgar Wilson Shawano was age 3 he was living at Kettle Point Indian Reservation where he held full rights in Canada.

The 1911 Census of Canada for Kettle Point names Edgar Shawanoo (born July, 1903) as one of the children of Cornelius and Amanda Shawanoo and also names his siblings. See media for images.

The ancestry of the Shawanoo (Shawano, Shawnoo etc.) family apears to originate in Shawano County, Wisconsin. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawano_County,_Wisconsin#History. This account gives additional alternate spellings. " Various historical recordings of the spelling of Shawano include: Sawanoh, Shawanaw, Sharuno, Shabin, Savannah, Savanah... which show the influence of French, German, and English translation (v's, w's, and b's, sounding very similar and thus being recorded incorrectly at times."

The Wooster Roll names 15 people with surname Shawano from Carter, Wisconsin (#39, 41-51, 53-55), all of whom had earlier associations with Canada (Kettle Point?) but who moved to Wisconsin at some unspecified time.

From the files of Connie Shawnoo Connie Shawnoo we know that Edgar Shawnoo grew up and married Cecilia Wilde (1907-1980). Their son was Clarence D. Shawnoo (1928-1972). Among Clarence Shawnoo's children is Connie Marie Shawnoo , the holder of data about the Shawnoo family after 1907.
