About Edward Grendon l, Ancient Planter
George Sandys, who served as Jamestown's inaugural resident treasurer from 1621-25, sold his 400 northside acres in James City to Edward Grendon in the 1620s. When Grendon passed away in 1628, he left the land to Thomas Grindon, an English merchant. Grendon arrived on the James in 1622 with wife and children: Edward (a baby), and daughter Temperance.
From “Edward Grendon in the Virginia, Biographical Encyclopedia”
came to Virginia before 1616, and in 1620 patented 150 acres on the south side of James river, over against Jamestown. This land, called "Grindall's Hill," was the same as the "Old Fort" land which Captain John Smith fortified for a retreat. It was a mile up Gray's creek, and went to Thomas Grendon, his heir, and he in 1649 sold it to Mountjoy Evelyn. In 1625 Edward Grendon was burgess.; ; IV--Burgesses and Other Prominent Persons.
In October 1628 Edward’s will,now lost, was presented to the Gen. Court. And proved 9 December 1628. Edward Grendon. Only an existing deed shows that Col. Thomas Grendon was his adult heir: Col. Thomas Grendon, was left 650 A of land, the sale of which shows it had belonged to Edward Grendon.
The relationship to Thomas Grendon, Sr., of Dukes Place is unclear.
