According to Katherine S.B. Keats-Rohan, in Domesday People (pp. 186-187), probably the most trusted source:

Eduuard Saresberiensis (Edward of Salisbury the Elder) was the richest English tenant-in-chief in Domesday Book; the bulk of his lands were in Wiltshire. A definitive account written by Williams titled The English, pp. 106-7, shows Edward as a prominent thegn under Edward the Confessor, probably identified with Edward "dives" (the Rich) who had associations with the north.

He received the bulk of his lands through Wulfwynn of Cresswell, probably his mother.

His parentage is in great dispute. Keats-Rohan says that Edward of Salisbury the Elder was often considered like a son of William (or Walter) d'Evreux, earl of Rosmare or Roumare and companion of William the Conqueror. Another medieval historian, Charles Cawley, notes that, according to the Book of Lacock, “Edwardum, natione Anglicum natum, postea vicecomitem Wiltes” was the son of “Walterus le Ewrus, comes de Rosmar” yet the Complete Peerage describes this supposed father as “a fictitious person” and states that Edward´s parentage is unknown. In that book, Cokayne states, "The Earls of Salisbury are sometimes mistakenly assigned the surname 'd’Evreux', but it is spurious, arising from confusion over the nickname of a fictitious ancestor, Walter le Ewrus (Walter the Fortunate). The family of the Earls of Salisbury never used the name 'd’Evreux', they do not descend from the Norman Counts of Evreux, nor do the later Devereux derive from them." [See Cokayne, George (1982). He was Sheriff of Wiltshire between 1070 and 1087.

He fought against King Louis VI of France, wearing the banner of Henry I at the Battle of Bremule on 20 August 1119.

Edward of Salisbury died before 1120, by which time his eldest son Walter was controlling his lands. He also had a daughter Mathilda, wife of Humphrey de Bohun of Trowbridge.

By a second wife Mathilda, Keats-Rohan speculates, he was probably the father of Edward of Salisbury the Younger, who inherited none of his father's lands but held some lands in fee of Ralph Fitzhubert in Nottingham and Derbyshire, likely a grandfather.

Thus, we can assign his as father of three children.

• **************************** Edward de Evereux, designated "of Salisbury," was subsequently sheriff of Wiltshire and, at the time of the general survey, possessed lordships in the counties of Dorset, Somerset, Surrey, Hants, Middlesex, Hereford, Buckingham, and Wilts. When sheriff of the latter county, we are told that he received in rent, as belonging to his office, 130 hogs, 32 bacons, 2 bushels and 16 gallons of wheat, the same of barley, 448 hens, 1,060 eggs, 100 cheeses, 52 lambs, 200 fleeces of wool, having likewise 162 acres of arable land and, amongst the reves land, to the value of £40 per annum. This Edward was standard bearer at the battle of Brennevill, in Normandy, fought 20th Henry I [1120], King Henry being present, and distinguished himself by his singular skill and valour. He left at his decease, a dau., Maude, wife of Humphrey de Bohun, and a son and heir, Walter de Evereux.
