Disaster Survivor. Elizabeth was born Eliza Neads in Tresco, Isles of Scilly. She was the 2nd daughter of George Neads and Ann Pender. Her sisters were Mary Elizabeth, Henrietta and Ellen. The family moved to the village of Madron, near Penzance, Cornwall around 1860. She married William Rowe Hocking there in 1884. He was a baker and they lived at 27 Leskinnnick Terrace. They later moved to 38 Adeline St. The couple had 7-children: Sidney, Emily, Ellen, William, Thomas, Horace and Richard George. Sons Sidney and Richard later moved to America in the early 1900s and lived at 457 Rhodes Ave. in Akron, Ohio. Sometime after her husband died, Elizabeth married a Mr. Guy. They lived at 26 St. Mary's St. Mr. Guy abused Elizabeth and after his death, she took back the name Hocking. She decided to join her sons in the U.S. George came back to bring her and several others to America. They were to sail on the Oceanic but because of a coal strike, they were switched to the Titanic. They traveled in 2nd class. After the disaster, Elizabeth, 2-daughters and 2-grandsons were rescued in lifeboat #4. George went down with the ship. She was met in N.Y. by son Sidney, who had come from Akron. Elizabeth lived in Akron for 2-years at 195 Gale St. On the evening of April 14, 1914, doctors C.E. Norris and C.W. Millikin found Elizabeth laying in the middle of E. Market St. in front of City Hospital. She had a very bad head wound and other injuries. She died at 5:00 am on April 15, 1914. Two years to the day of her rescue from the lifeboat. Cause of death given: Hit by car, streetcar or a mugging.
