Elizabeth “Betsy” BARNES was born on 9 June 1805 in Highworth, Wiltshire, England, United Kingdom. Her parents were William BARNES and Mary DODD.

Elizabeth emigrated to Australia with her parents and siblings, arriving on 13 November 1825 on "York"

Elizabeth married Richard Bapson MERCHANT on 30 December 1827 in Maitland, New South Wales. Together they had the following children:

• 1831 Sara Ann ;
• 1833 Jane ;
• 1835 James ;
• 1837 Thomas ;
• 1839 Harriet Eliza ;
• 1841 Caroline Annie ;
• 1842 Charles Edward ;

• 1845 Mary ;
• 1848 {unnamed} ; died young
• 1850 John .

On 28 May 1856 Elizabeth and her 6 youngest children (Harriet 17, Caroline 15, Charles 14, Susan 12, Mary 11, John 6) emigrated to America on "Jennie Ford"

• Family lore states that her husband Richard was supposed to go with them, and then they would send for the eldest children, however for some reason he did not go.

In 1860 Elizabeth was living in Beaver City, Utah, United States with children Charles 17, Mary 14 and John 10

She died 10 June 1863 in Beaver, Beaver County, Utah, United States.
