Disputed Name and Ancestry

The name and ancestry of Elizabeth Somerville, here treated, is disputed. According to James, eleventh Lord Somerville (1652-82), writing in volume one of his account of the family (Published in 1815), Janet Somerville, daughter of Thomas, Lord Somerville: "was marryed upon Neill or either Duncan Campbell, the first Earle of Argyle. Lord Somerville's work was subsequently edited by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), who added the following note: "Douglas and Crawford, I observe, name this lady Elizabeth, and wed her with Archibald, son and heir of Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochern. This Archibald, according to these genealogists, died before his father, leaving issue, Sir Colin Campbell, first Earl of Argyle, so created by James II. in 1457." Memorie of the Somervilles, Volume I, page 134 The late George William Campbell, appears to have folowed Douglas and Crawford. Writing in his account of the the family of Somerville, Lord Somerville (Published in 1911), he claims that Elizabeth Somerville, here treated, is the daughter of John, third Lord Somerville, and his wife Helen Hepburn.
