About Emma Kelsall

One of the pioneer settlers of New ZeaIand passed away at Napier last month in the person of Mrs. Emma Kelsall, relict of the late' Sergeant-Major Kelsall, of the, Royal Artillery, at the age of 78 years. The deceased lady went to New Zealand in the early sixties, with her husband who was commissariat officer in the Waikato during the Maori war: For many months she was isolated from any white women, and had many thrilling experiences during the campaign. After the Maori war, Sergeant Major Kelsall returned to Scotland, where he was instructor of artillery at Broughty Ferry Castle a Scottish fortress for a number of years; subsequently returning to New Zealand to take command of the forces in the Hawke's Bay district, where he was accidentally shot while on duty 39 years ago. The late Mrs. Kelsall leaves, two sons (Mr. Hector Kelsall, of Darlinghurst, Sydney; and Mr. Frank Kelsall, of Mt. Hawthorn, Western Australia), and four daughters in New Zealand. Her third son, Captain Victor Kelsall (New Zealand head quarters staff) was killed at Gallipoli; and six grandsons are also on active service, one of whom, Sergeant' Victor Hoare (New Zealand Artillery) has been awarded the Croix de Guerre.
