Emmy Holz came from a modest family. At the age of 15, she began studying at a dance academy. She later joined the Tallinn Theatre and Ballet Company and, from 1918, the first professional ballet troupe of the Estonian Theatre and Opera. She performed in operas, operettas and concert choreographies, as well as oriental dance numbers and cabaret shows. She enjoyed success and the atmosphere of bohemianism (the joy of which perhaps came from the intuition of living between two wars) until, after interrupting a tour due to an injury, she surrendered to Josef Schulze, who had been trying for some time to dazzle her with his successful staging and a great display of financial resources.
They went first to Riga, then through Germany to Brussels and then settled in Paris. It seems likely that she did not suspect that she was on the run until she discovered that the French police were investigating her movements. She then tried to get money to return to Estonia, but her parents had no funds and the doors to the showbiz were closed.
