Erna fled to Germany during WW2 where she met her future husband Alfred Nurmepuu in a DP camp. They were married there and had a son. In 1951 they emigrated to the United States and settled in Columbia County, New York. Erna died in 1995, but her ashes were transported back to Estonia. They are now buried in the Nurmepuu family plot in Kose Cemetery, Harjumaa. The grave is unmarked.
