BIOGRAPHY: Gabriel ELKINS had at least 20 children by 2 or 3 different wives. By his first wife Stacy DILLARD, (daughter of Thomas Dillard, Jr. and Martha Webb) Gabriel had 11 children and maybe 12. Some researchers think Murphy Gabriel ELKINS, the 12th child born in 1814, was a child by a 2nd wife Mary Lucus PENDLETON. Artie and Susanna was born from his last wife Sophia DILLARD. Gabriel Elkins, born probably in Pittsylvania Co. (later Henry Co.) VA. between the year 1765-66. Apparently he died in Paris, Lamar Co, TX. He married about 1786, probably in Pittsylvania Co, VA., his first wife Stacy Dillard. Stacy Dillard (daughter of Col. Thomas Dillard, Jr. and Martha Webb) was born about 1770-73, probably in Pittsylvania Co, VA. and died in Buncombe Co, NC. about 1812. At some point between 1812 and 1814, Gabriel married his second wife Mary Lucas Pendleton, (daughter of John Pendleton and Rachel Lucas), and had a son Murphy Gabriel Elkins, born 1814. His 2nd wife died and Gabriel married his 3rd wife, Sophia Dillard, a niece of his 1st wife, and daughter of Thomas Dillard, 111 and Dorcus Love. Some researchers say Sophia was a daughter of John Dillard, who was a brother of Stacy. In the absence of proof this is hard to determine and a lot of people have researched this man and have different conclusions. Buncombe Co, NC Land Entries, 1794-1795, page 25, entry 3622, April 21, 1795, Gabriel Elkins entered 100 acres in Buncombe Co, on the fork of Ivy River, that road that does up going to Bauld Mountain; Thomas Love, Esq. warranty issued. Probably had just One child with second Wife, that being Murphy Gabriel about 1814, when Marie Pendleton died ( probably in childbirth. Children born after 1814 were with Sophie Dillard.
