Son of slave owner Thomas Lea and his slave Kizzy. This was verified as presented on the PBS program FINDING YOUR ROOTS WITH HENRY LOUIS GATES JR, which featured the DNA & genealogical research findings for celebrity Alex Haley, author of the book TV series ROOTS.
George Lea was born in 1806 on a cotton plantation in Caswell County, North Carolina. He was the son of Kizzy, who was a slave, and the son of his own master Thomas Lea. He became a trainer of fighting, for the one who made his roosters participate in cock fights. George married a slave girl named Mathilda McGreggor, which was sold to Thomas Lea's plantation, they had 4 children together one of which is Tom Murray.
