George was 1 of 8 children born to Nathaniel I. Oakes & his 2nd wife, Mary (Holloway).
George was a clothier & a farmer by trade. He married his 1st wife, Lydia (Eagar) on October 23, 1744, in Westborough, MA.

George married his 2nd wife, Mercy (Bartlett) on June 12, 1765.

George served in the Colonial Wars (1755 & 1759). In the Revolutionary War he was a private in a company of Minute Men at the Lexington Alarm in 1775. He enlisted August 20, 1777, in the company of Capt. David Brent, Col. Nathan Sparhawk's regiment. He also marched from Rutland to Bennington on an alarm. During 11 days of service he traveled out & back home a total of 226 miles.
