About Giorgio Tagliavacca

Giorgio Tagliavacca x (broken engagement) Angeliki-Adelaide Teotochi daughter of Nicolo-Andrea Teotochi & Angeliki-Adelaide Ventoura xx (1st marriage for both) Adiamantini Braila-Armeni daughter of Sir Peter Brailas-Armenis & Marianna Gennata

When Sisi returned to Corfu for the first time in 1885, she was so taken with the island that she expressed the wish to build a residence there. Franz Joseph was less than enthusiastic about her plans but supported her in her extensive architectural project. She purchased the Villa Braila from a man called Tagliavacca and initially used it when visiting the island. However, in 1888 she had the villa demolished and over the following three years a palatial mansion in the Pompeiian style, called the Achilleion, was built to replace it.

The Achilleion was built on the property of the famous Corfiot Petros Brailas-Armenis (a friend of Sisi) after his death. It was named after Achilles, whom Sisi admired because of his power.

The previous building was a very desolate and dilapidated mansion owned by a Mr. Tagliavacca, who was a close relative of the Braila family. Empress Sisi's travel companion Alexander Freiherr von Warsberg described the area of the old Villa Braila in his book Odyssey Landscapes, which appeared in 1878, so impressively that Elisabeth, after having read his work, wanted to acquire this old house without delay. Sisi considered the island of Corfu as her new future home and cited: Corfu is an ideal stay; Climate, walks in the endless olive shade, good driveways and the wonderful sea air, plus the magnificent moonshine. The old villa had Sisi set up during their two-month stay in 1888 and inhabited, however, the property of Emperor Franz Joseph was acquired in 1889. Warsberg was also an expert in Greek-ancient culture and Elisabeth commissioned him to design a new palace in the style of Greek architecture. Elisabeth supposedly regretted that she had the new Achilleion built, because she said: I destroyed the old melancholy. Actually, I regret it now. Our dreams are more beautiful if we do not realize them.

GRECIA.

I censiti furono 1185.
