Hubert de Vaux, also known as Hubert de Vallibus, was a prominent 12th-century English noble. He received barony of Gilsland in Cumberland from Henry II in 1158.

Marriage and issue

He married Grecia, of unknown parentage, they had the following issue:

  1. Robert de Vaux, Lord of Gilsland (died c.1195) married Ada, widow of Simon de Morville, the daughter and heiress of William de Engaine,[12] died without surviving issue.[13]
  2. Ranulf de Vaux, Lord of Triermain and Torcrossock (died 1199), married Alicia, succeeded his brother, had issue.[14]
  3. Eustace de Vaux, Lord of Castle Carrock and Hayton, married Alice, the sister and co-heiress of Robert, son of Bueth.[15]
  4. Beatrix de Vaux, married William Briwerre, Lord of Tor Brewer, had issue. Beatrix had been the mistress of Reginald de Dunstanville, 1st Earl of Cornwall (died 1175) and was the mother of Henry FitzCount (died 1221) and William FitzCount.

Notes

~ Cokayne's Complete Peerage, 2nd Edition, Vol. I, (Abergavenny), p. 22, Reynold de Briouze married Grecia, daughter and in her issue, coheir of William Brieguerre or Briwere, by his wife Beatrice de Vaux. 141

Beatrice de Valle (or Vaux), wife of William Briwerre, wa s almost certainly the daughter of Hubert de Vaux, baron of Gilsland (see ID 20718?), Cumberland, by his wife, Grace.

The evidence for this is slim but compelling. Beatrice ha d property in Devonshire as her maritagium. The early hist ory of this property is shrouded.

However, Hubert de Vaux is known to have owned property in Devonshire, and probably lived there during part of his l ife. Beatrice de Valle had a daughter Grace Briwerre who I presume was named for her mother, Grace de Vaux. Grace was rather rare as a woman's name in that period. I hav e proven that William Briwerre acquired property from one o f Beatrice's Vaux brothers and I have proven that William B riwerre was involved in a suit with the widow of another brother. If nothing else, this proves that the two families knew each other well.
