Once again, we find ourselves with a problem concerning Valentine. He has been most commonly believed to be a son of Henry and Susanna Williamson Hatcher (from the line of Benjamin Hatcher) but on the slimmest of evidence - a deed in which he sells a slave to Elizabeth Hatcher, a daughter of Henry and Susannah - with the assumption that he and Elizabeth must be siblings. This is simply not sufficient proof to claim that type of relationship. He was also NOT mentioned in a bill of sale between Frederick Hatcher, mother Susanna, and his supposed siblings. But new chancery court records have been found for Henry Hatcher that make it quite clear he was alive in 1765 and that he likely died sometime before September 1767 when Valentine sold the slave to Elizabeth. The chancery records show that Henry had serious financial problems thru the years and that when he died was deeply in debt to many people. Valentine's document in late 1767 was followed soon after by Frederick's sale of a slave to his mother and siblings. What seems clear now is that Henry left very little with any land probably mortgaged and only personal property, including a few slaves, left to distribute. Only the two records have been found showing the sale of these slaves to family members and are most likely the only records relating to the "estate" of Henry that were filed in court. The closeness of these two records in the books strengthens the case for Valentine being a son and involved in the distribution of Henry's property. Based on the above newly found documents, Valentine has been reattached as a son of Henry and Susanna. The DNA results for Valentine have always been a bit at odds with the rest of the Hatcher results with no close matches to any of the Hatchers. But the results of the DNA test on a descendant of Archibald Hatcher of HenryCo do show that Archibald and Valentine were closely related. They may have been cousins or uncle and nephew. While Henry and Susanna did have a proven son named Archibald, there is no clear connection in the records beyond the given name to show that the Archibald of HenryCo, VA, was their son. In fact, the records create a problem for Archibald, son of Henry and Susanna, ever being in HenryCo. A review of the records of "Archibald" shows that he was in CumberlandCo from 1765-1768. We then find him in BuckinghamCo on the extant tax lists from 1773 to 1785, often listed as overseer for John Hobson. In 1777 and 1780, he signed Buckingham petitions: Magazine of VA Genealogy, Vol. 28, May, 1990, No. 2 pg. 89: Archibald Hatcher signed petition, County of Buckingham, re: county boundaries. 5 Dec 1777 pg. 95: Archibald Hatcher signed petition by Buckingham residents asking that all clergymen be required to give allegiance to the State. 7 Dec 1780 In 1784 he is listed as Archer Hatcher, on the CumberlandCo HOH list with 8 whites and in 1785 he is again found on the Buckingham Tax List. The flip-flopping in the records showing Archibald in either Cumberland or Buckingham appears to have much to do with John Hobson who owned land in both Cumberland and Buckingham (per his will). Research into the location of his land shows that he owned land on and near the Willis river which begins in Cumberland, running parallel to the county line, then swinging into Buckingham. It appears likely that John's land straddled the Cumberland/Buckingham line and it should be noted that there was a boundary controversy in 1777 (See Buckingham petition above). Archibald himself may have lived on the Cumberland side but as overseer for John Hobson's Buckingham property may well have ended up on their tax lists, too. Yet in 1780 we find the following record in HenryCo: An alphabetical List of Tax in the County of Henry for the raising of money for the Service of the United States. Delivered to Archelaus Hughes, Esq. Sherif of said County to collect, due the 20th day of February, 1780 Hatcher, Archibald This record indicates there is an Archibald Hatcher in HenryCo before February 1780. In 1781 this same Archibald is serving in the military in Brice Martin's Co and from 1786 until his death, this Archibald remains in HenryCo, being found in numerous tax and land records. Were it not for the 1780-1781 records of an Archibald in HenryCo, it would be reasonable to believe that in 1786 when John Hobson's son, Thomas, took over the Buckingham property he inherited, Archibald of Cumberland, no longer needed as an overseer, may have moved to HenryCo. But it would be illogical to believe that he would be taxable as a resident in HenryCo in Feb 1780, then back to BuckinghamCo to sign a petition as a resident in Dec 1780, then back to HenryCo to serve in the military in 1781, then back to CumberlandCo again. Since movements of this type cannot be considered normal, it is for this reason that it is believed there are two Archibalds - one the son of Henry/Susanna of Cumberland and one closely related to Valentine. In light of the DNA results showing no testers from the line of Benjamin (Henry and Susanna) with these same mutations, it makes much more sense to say that Archibald, son of Henry and Susanna, lived and died in Cumberland/BuckinghamCo and that Archibald of HenryCo may be a cousin or nephew of Valentine. In January 2007 the DNA results from a descendant of Drury Hatcher, proven son of Henry and Susannah Hatcher, were received. These results contained enough differences between the results of Archibald and Valentine to further strengthen the belief that while Archibald and Valentine were closely related, Drury was not. In addition, Drury's results on 25 markers showed the same mutation found in the results of a descendant of Drury's half-brother, Josiah Hatcher.
