Sir Henry Wentworth of Nettlestead, Suffolk, KB (b. about 1448, died between 17 August 1499 and 27 February 1501), de jure Lord Despenser, was the grandfather of King Henry VIII's third Queen, Jane Seymour, and the great-grandfather of Jane's son, King Edward VI.

Sir Henry Wentworth was born about 1448, the only son and heir of the courtier Sir Philip Wentworth (b. about 1424) of Nettlestead and his wife, Mary Clifford, and the grandson of Roger Wentworth and Margery, Lady Roos. In taking as her second husband Roger Wentworth, a younger son of John Wentworth of Elmsall, Yorkshire, Sir Philip's mother, Margery, Lady Roos, who was the daughter and heiress of Philip, Lord Despenser, was said to have 'married herself dishonourably without licence from the King'.[1] Sir Philip Wentworth served in the army of King Henry VI in the Wars of the Roses. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Hexham, and beheaded at Middleham, Yorkshire, on 18 May 1464.[2]

Sir Henry Wentworth was pardoned in 1462. Two years later his father's lands were restored to him by Parliament. In 1475 he went to France with the army of King Edward IV. He was invested with the Order of the Bath in 1489. He served as an Esquire of the Household and a Knight of the Body, and held the offices of Knight of the Shire for Yorkshire, and High Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1482. He was High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1489 and 1492.[3]

Sir Henry Wentworth's will, made on 17 August 1499, was proved 27 February 1501. He was buried in Newhouse Abbey, Lincolnshire.[4]

Sir Henry Wentworth married firstly, Anne Say (died before 22 October 1494), the daughter of Sir John Say and Elizabeth Cheyney, by whom he had two sons, Sir Richard and Edward, and four daughters:[5]

• Elizabeth Wentworth (died after 22 September 1545), married firstly, Sir Roger Darcy of Danbury, Essex; married secondly, as his second wife, Sir Thomas Wyndham of Felbrigg, Norfolk (died 1522),[6] Vice-Admiral and councillor to Henry VIII, by whom she had one son; and married thirdly, as his third wife, John Bourchier, 1st Earl of Bath[7]
• Margery Wentworth (c. 1478 - c. October 1550), married before 1500 Sir John Seymour. Their daughter, Jane, was Henry VIII's third Queen and the mother of King Edward VI.[8]

Sir Henry Wentworth married secondly, by licence dated 22 October 1594, Elizabeth Neville (d. September 1517), the second daughter of Sir John Neville, Marquess of Montagu, and widow of Thomas, Lord Scrope of Masham and Upsall (d. 3 April 1493). They had no issue.[9]

He married MARY CLIFFORD, daughter of John Clifford, K.G., 7th Lord Clifford, by Elizabeth, daughter of Henry 'Hotspur' Percy, L.G., K.B. [see CLIFFORD 10 for her ancestry]. They had one son, Henry, K.G., and two daughters, Margaret (wife of Thomas Cotton, Esq.) and Elizabeth. In 1458 he and his mother, Margery, Lady Roos, and their children "of both sexes" received a papal indult that a confessor of their choice may absolve them from all their vows and grant them absolution for their sins. SIR PHILIP WENTWORTH served in the army of King Henry VI, and died intestate 18 May 1464, being beheaded at Middleham, Yorkshire, after the Battle of Hexham, where he had been taken prisoner by the Yorkists. His wife, Mary, was buried at the Friars Minor at Ipswich, Suffolk.

He went in the king's army to France in 1475. His wife, Anne, was a legatee in the 1478 will of her father. She was living 25 Feb. 1483/4. In 1493 he and his cousins, John Scrope, 5th Lord Scrope of Bolton, and John Scrope, Knt., of Castle Combe, Wiltshire, successfully recovered the manor of Harston, Cambridgeshire, as heirs general of Robert de Tibetot, Knt., 3rd Lord Tibetot. He married (2nd) at Deighton, Yorkshire by license dated 22 Oct. 1494 ELIZABETH NEVILLE, widow of Thomas Scrope, 6th Lord Scrope of Masham and Upsall (died 23 April 1493), and 2nd daughter of John Neville, K.G., Earl of Northumberland, afterwards Marquess of Montagu, by Isabel, daughter and heiress of Edmund Ingaldesthorpe, Knt. • NEVILLE, JOHN, Marquis of Montagu and Earl of Northumberland (d. 1471), third son of Richard Neville, earl of Salisbury [q. v.], and Alice, daughter and heiress of Thomas de Montacute or Montagu, fourth earl of Salisbury [q. v.], was born between 1428 and 1435. His brothers, Richard Neville [q. v.], ‘the king-maker,’ and George Neville, archbishop of York [q. v.], are separately noticed. .... etc.
• He married, on 25 April, 1457 Isabel, daughter and coheiress of Sir Edmund Ingoldesthorpe of Borough Green, near Newmarket, by Joan, sister and eventually heiress of John Tiptoft, earl of Worcester (Paston Letters, i. 416; Rot. • WENTWORTH, THOMAS, first Baron Wentworth of Nettlestead (1501–1551), was descended from an ancient Yorkshire family, two branches of which were settled at Wentworth-Woodhouse, and North Elmsall. Thomas Wentworth, the great earl of Strafford [q. v.], belonged to the former branch (see Foster, Yorkshire Pedigrees). Roger Wentworth (d. 1452), younger son of John Wentworth of North Elmsall, Yorkshire, acquired the manor of Nettlestead, Suffolk, in right of his wife Margery (1397–1478), daughter of Sir Philip Despenser and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Robert de Tiptoft or Tibetot, last baron Tiptoft of the first creation and lord of the manor of Nettlestead. Roger Wentworth's younger son, Henry (d. 1482), was by his first wife ancestor of the Wentworths of Gosfield, Essex, and by his second wife of the Wentworths of Lillingstone Lovell, Oxfordshire; to the latter branch belonged Paul Wentworth [q. v.], Peter Wentworth (1530?–1596) [q. v.], and Sir Peter Wentworth (1592–1675) [q. v.] Roger's elder son, Sir Philip, was father of Sir Henry Wentworth (d. 1499), whose daughter Margery (d. 1550) married Sir John Seymour (d. 1536) of Wolfhall, and was mother of Queen Jane Seymour, of Protector Somerset, and grandmother of Edward VI. Sir Henry Wentworth's son, Sir Richard Wentworth (d. 1528), was sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1509 and 1517, was knighted in 1512, served at the battle of Spurs in 1513, was present at the Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520, and died on 17 Oct. 1528. He married Anne, daughter of Sir James Tyrrell [q. v.], the supposed murderer of the princes in the Tower, and was father of the subject of this article.

• ELIZABETH NEVILLE (d.c.1518)
• Elizabeth Neville was the daughter of John Neville, marquess Montagu (1428-April 14, 1471) and Isabel Ingoldsthorpe (d. May 20, 1476). She married Thomas, Lord Scrope of Masham and Upsall (d.1494), by whom she had one child, Alice (d.1492). Elizabeth's second husband was Sir Henry Wentworth (d.1499/1500). Elizabeth made her will on March 7, 1513/14. She gave instructions for her body to be buried in the Blackfriars in London, beside her first husband, and for a stone to be put over her grave with the images of herself, her first husband, and their daughter upon it. She ordered a second tomb for her second husband in Newsom Abbey, Lincolnshire, and a third for her father and mother in Bisham Abbey, Berkshire. She made several bequests to specific women. To Mary Grey, "daughter in base unto Thomas Grey, Marquess of Dorset," she left "my bed that the said Lord Marquess was wont to lie in and all the parcel that belongeth thereo and all the apparel of the same chamber." To her sister, Lucy Neville, Lady Browne, she left "a primer and a psalter, which book I had of the gift of the most excellent princess King Henry the Seventh his mother." She left two servants, Katheryn Clyfton and Dorathe Danby, twenty marks apiece. And to her niece, Lucy Browne (d.1557), wife of John Cutte or Cutts (1507-1528), she left land in Cambridgeshire. She also made John Cutte and Lucy Browne her executors. The will was not proved until December 9, 1521.

Husband of Anne Say, daughter of Sir John Say and Elizabeth Cheyne. They had two sons and four daughters; Sir Richard, Edward, Elizabeth wife of Roger Darcy and Sir Thomas Wyndham and Sir John Bouchier, Margery wife of Sir John Seymour and mother of Queen Jane Seymour, Dorothy wife of Sir Robert Broughton and Jane.

Secondly, he was the husband of Elizabeth Neville, daughter of Sir John Neville and Isabel Ingaldesthorpe, widow of Sir Thomas Scrope who died in 1493. They were married in Deighton, Yorkshire by licence dated 22 Oct 1494, and had no issue.

Sir Henry was in the King's army in France in 14745.
