About Hon. John Spencer, MP

John Spencer (13 May 1708 – 19 June 1746) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1732 to 1746. He was the youngest son of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland and Lady Anne Churchill.

He died on 20 June 1746 at age 38 from unknown causes 'because he would not be abridged of those invaluable blessings of an English subject, brandy, small-beer, and tobacco'.1

After his death, his widow remarried four years later to the 2nd Earl Cowper. The Althorp estate remains the seat of the earls, but the Wimbledon estate was later sold by the 4th Earl in 1846.

He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Woodstock.3 On 12 January 1733/34 He inherited his father's Spencer estates in Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, together with most of his grandmother Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough's property, including the Manor of Winbledon and Wimbledon Park.4 He held the office of Ranger of Windsor Great Park.4

Family

On 14 February 1733/4, a month after inheriting his family's estates, he married Georgiana Caroline Carteret (the third daughter and co-heir of Viscount Carteret, later Earl Granville).[3]

The couple were the parents of two children, one son and one daughter:

  1. John Spencer, who was later created Earl Spencer in 1765.
  2. Diana Spencer, who died at eight years old.
