About Ishmael Chavis
http://www.freeafricanamericans.com/Chavis_family.htm Ishmael Chavis was born in 1750 in SC in what became Kingston Co, Lugoff, Kershaw Co, but was legislated as Old Cheraws District by the SC Legislature in 1767 to parents Phillip Chavis and Selah Bass / Nansemond. Ishmael married Revel Jacobs who had Lazarus Elisha Chavs, Mariah Chavis, John Chavis and Julian Chavis. The family relocated to Robeson Co, NC where Ishmael died in1805 and was buried there.
While in SC, work was done with the Waccamaw and there is a Jacob's Mill in Elgin, SC. When moving to Drowning Creek, Push's Marsh is where their deeded land was located. Ishmael has a native history with his mothers' lines of Pamunky Neck Rez. = Lightfoot. Lateral Anderson Nansemond cousins went to Lost Creek Settlement and were joined by some Cherokee of Mexico to work the mines. Other lateral native communities went to Cheraw, MS area and Cheraw, SC area and some ended up Coushatta Parish, La and name morphed to Hoozier (Canal Digging Hughes in Colonial to Rev War in Licking Creek, Va where there was a Goins School (Native) and some Hughes (Fitz Hugh) went to Indiana and were Hoosiers.
