About James Hughes

This James Hughes was linked in as the first husband of Mary Mair (Morphett), first child of Sir John Morphett of Cummins, Adelaide, SA.

This seems most unlikely, because when this Mary married William Mair in 1862, her name was given as Morphett, not Hughes, both in the BDM record and in the newspaper family notice. See the Sources tab for her profile.

James did marry a Mary Morphett at Robe, SA in 1860. You can see the image of the record for the marriage of James Hughes to Mary Morphett in 1860 in Robe in the Sources tab of this profile. He is listed as living in Biscuit Flat, which seems a strange name for a location, but it is correct. Here's an interesting article on where the name comes from.

Some family trees show the death of this James Hughes in 1860 in Victoria. The image of that death record shows that the death happened at
Mount-Hesse Station
155 - 159 Mount Hesse Estate Road, OMBERSLEY VIC
which is about 40 km west of Geelong.
The image of that death record shows no record of any marriage, and gives the age of the deceased as 21, and the date of death as 22nd February, 1860.
The image of the marriage record for James Hughes and Mary Morphett in 1860 gives his age as 25, and the date of the marriage as 8th June, 1860, after the other James had died. So the James Hughes married in 1860 is not the same person as the James Hughes who died in 1860. I have made a new profile for the James Hughes who died in 1860.
