Today’s post brings us to the old Roberts Mill, previously known as Lukens Mill. This gristmill was built by Robert Townsend on what was once known as Mill Street, later renamed Church Lane. Though it has been said the mill was demolished in 1873, the 1862 Samuel Smedley map of Philadelphia does not show the structure as standing, whereas maps from 1843 and 1855 do. Historian Edwin C. Jellett copied this photograph from an earlier, unknown source.
The location where this mill once stood is at the present-day intersection of Church Lane and North Lambert Street, just east of Wister Street, the eastern boundary of Germantown.
