About Jane Balcom

Biography

Jane Holbrook, daughter of William Holbrook and Elizabeth Pitts, was born about 1652 in Weymouth, Massachusetts, and died about 1696 in Providence, Rhode Island.

Jane married 1) on 18 Oct 1671 in Medfield to John Albee, son of Benjamin Albee and Hannah.

Jane married 2) about 1678 to Alexander Balcom, parents unknown. He was a widower with three children.

John, son of Benjamin Albee, was born before 1643, probably 1640. He was the twin brother of James. It is possible that James Albee and John were the same person.

They were married on the same day, on 18 Oct 1671. John married Jane Holbrook daughter of William. He died in Mendon, July 14, 1675, and left two children. The birth of a daughter Hannah 10 Oct 1673 is recorded at Rehoboth but the son's (John) birth has not been found. Jane (Holbrook) Albee was appointed guardian of 2 children by the Suffolk court.

John Allbee, a descendant of Benjamin, and believed to be a son, or grandson, settled in Dunstable, Massachusetts, in that part called Northtown, later known as the town of Townsend, Massachusetts. He married at Groton, Massachusetts, April 25, 1732, Abigail Searle (Sarl), both of North Town (Townsend).

John Albee was one of 8 people killed at Mendon July 14 1675 [in King Philip’s War]. John was one of 8 people killed at Mendon July 14 1675. Suffolk Probate Vol 5 p 275 shows administration granted to Jane on 19 Nov 1675 for herself and two children. Jane remarried Alexander Balcome 1676/7 and had a son John born abt 1678. William Holbrook Jr, brother of Jane, in his will of 9 Sep 1696 mentions Jane Balcome and her daughter Albee. This daughter was Experience, who married Stephen Sly 10 Jul 1700. Early records of the town call her Experience Abbey, but William Holbrook Jr's will, says, a bequest to his kinswoman Experience Sly heretofore Alby. So there are the two children of Jane and John Albee (Hannah and John).

A Monument now stands near this site for those slain that fatal day. History of the area tells us, that John Albee, Richard Post (husband of Mary Tyler) John Garnsey, Joseph Stevens the Blacksmith, were some of the other settlers killed that day.)

Hannah and Experience Albee were daughters of John Albee and Jane Holbrook. I note that Jane had a younger sister named Experience. Hannah and Experience may have been twins, both born October 10, 1673 in Rehoboth. Alternative records show Hannah as the elder sister, born 10/10/1673, in Rehoboth, and Experience born in 1675 in Medfield MA. Neither birth appears in the birth records for these towns, although their marriage is of record in Medfield.

After John was killed in an Indian raid, Jane remarried widower Alexander Balcom. They had what is now called a blended family, with his older children, her Albee children, and their younger children. Adams-21565 21:38, 16 February 2016 (EST)
