  • OQUAGA or ONOQUAGA, NEW YORK is an old Iroquois village on the east branch of the Susquehanna River in present day Broome County, New York. Oquaga is about twenty miles south to southwest of current Windsor, New York and the old Iroquois village called Unadilla. Before the Revolutionary War, Oquaga was inhabited by about 750 members of the Six Nations, the majority of them were Oneidas. Joseph Brant chose Oquaga as his headquarters during expedition of Barry St. Leger that ended with the unsuccessful siege of Fort Stanwix. Brant continued to use Oquaga as his headquarter until the end of the war. Oquaga is a Mohawk word meaning "place with wild grapes".
