Aaron Jean-Marie Lustiger (17 September 1926 – 5 August 2007) was a French cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He was Archbishop of Paris from 1981 until his resignation in 2005.

Jean-Marie was born in 1927 in Paris, but he often visited Poland to see what had been described to him by his parents. Finally, he came to Poland to discover Bedzin on his own with his cousin Arno Lustiger in 1992. They visited the old synagogue and ghetto. In 1997 Lustiger was made an honorary citizen of Bedzin.
“I was born Jewish. I received the name of my paternal grandfather [a Yiddish-speaking rabbi in Silicia], Aaron. Lustiger remembered his father telling him as a child that they were Levi’im and that they had a responsibility. Source
Lustiger died on August 5, 2007, at age 80. He wrote his own epitaph:

I HAVE REMAINED JEWISH

Lustiger taught himself Hebrew in readiness for his aliyah, or formal return to Israel. Every detail of his funeral, with its two rites, he carefully arranged himself.
Then he wrote his epitaph: "I was born Jewish. I received the name of my paternal grandfather, Aaron. Having become Christian by faith and baptism, I have remained Jewish. As did the Apostles." Source
