Biography
John Bishop Sr., was born in England about 1600 and was one of the twenty-five immigrants who came with Rev. Henry Whitfield's company in the first ship "St. John" commanded by Captain Russell which sailed direct from London, England on May 20, 1639 landed at Quinnipiack now New Haven, CT between July 10th and 15th, 1639.[1] The list of men who sailed and settled, with few exceptions, Guilford, CT include: John Bishop, Francis Bushnell, Francis Chatfield, William Chitteden, Thomas Cook, Abraham Cruttenden, Henry Dowd, William Dudley, Richard Gutridge, John Hoadley, William Hall, John Hughes, John Jordan, Thomas Jones, Henry Kingsnorth, Robert Kitchell, William Leete, John Mepham, William Plane, John Parmelin, Thomas Nash, Thomas Norton, John Stone, William Stone, Rev. Henry Whitfield.
He brought his family of six children with him, and moved east to Memunkatuck, purchased the land from local tribes founding Guilford Connecticut in 1643. John Bishop was one of Six men as Trustees of the community land and justice of the peace from 1639-1643 He was married to Anne Bishop in England she d. April 1676 in Hartford Connecticut. They had 6 Children Mary, Anne, John, Bethia, Stephen, Sarah. John also is said to be brother of James Bishop of New Haven, a contemporary. His name was signed second to the Plantation Covenant made on shipboard June 1, 1639. Robert Kitchell signed first. The order of the name indicates the respective social and other standing of the company, judging from analogy in similar cases. He was fifth on the list of trustees of the Indian purchases, and one of the four magistrates appointed to administer justice and preserve peace in the community.
He died in Guilford before January 7, 1661, and his wife Ann Stevens Bishop 1592-1676, died April, 1676. His estate was the largest in the colony with the exception of Mr. Whitfield's, when his inventory was taken. His widow Ann survived him, and her will was probated in Hartford, June, 1676. His sons, John and Stephen lived and died in Guilford, and both had large sized families. The site of John Bishop's homestead was suitably marked at the celebration of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the settlement of Guilford, Connecticut, held September 8, 9, 10, 1889.
Notes
Parents: unknown. Seen as Richard Bishop & his wife Dulzabella with no supporting evidence. Disputed Origins and other family relations A John Bishop born in the 1580s, 1590s or early 1600s would not have been the son of a Richard Bishop born in the early 1600s. While oft seen in family files, the estimated age of men Richard Bishop (Bishop-1500) and Richard Bishop (Bishop-179) would preclude them to be candidates as the father of John Bishop, early Guilford settler. See also G2G discussions: "Straightening out some Kings and Bishops, early New England immigrants" and "If John Bishop was born in 1590, how was his father Richard born in 1609?"
Some family files place a daughter, Mary Bishop, the wife of George Hubbard, in the family of this John Bishop. This association was apparently devised from a passage in the will of Anne Bishop, John's widow. (Her will calls out a grandchild, "Elezabeth Hubbard.") A discussion about why George Hubbard's wife could not have been John Bishop's daughter is found in Nathan Grier Parke II, The ancestry of Lorenzo Ackley & his wife Emma Arabella Bosworth, Donald Lines Jacobus, ed. (1960), 98-100. Marriage is recorded both in England and Connecticut on the LDS site.
Gravesite Details
Although this person was likely interred in Guilford's original village cemetery (now the commons and public park in downtown Guilford), no surviving gravestone was known in 1818 when all gravestones at the Village Green, but not the people's remains, were dispersed to other town cemeteries. Time and weather had erased the location of this grave when the cemetery was moved
