About John Cage

Arrived Amer. 1635-6 from Portsmm. John arrived in America in 1636 as an indentured servant of Thomas Cornwallis and had an obligation to him for 8 years service. (2) His will was probated July 16, 1677.

Notes

  • Though slavery existed at the time, indentured servants were the preferred choice of planters in the Chesapeake. Farm owners would not only get cheap labor for the price of room and board, but they were granted 50 acres for each servant whose fare they paid.
  • Charles County Circuit Court, Liber B, 10 March 1664/5, Page 445 - 446 Mr. Walter Beane and Mr. William Marshall having bound over John Cage in a bond of 10000# of tobacco to make his appearance, Cage requests his appearance be noted and requests the following oaths; granted: Brigit Philpot swore that Mary Grub said that she was with child and it was by John Grub because no one else had anything to do with her and her former husband in England; William Gandie swore that he heard Mary Grub say that no man in the world had anything to do with her but John Grub and her former husband in England and that the said John Brub would not acknowledge it because she came a month or two before his reckoning; Amy Lambert swore that Mary Grub said that she was with child by John Grub.
  • John Cage is by the judgment of the Court cleared from his bond and Mary Grub is ordered to ask John Cage on her bended knee forgiveness acknowledging that she has maliciously wronged him in laying the child to him.
  • John Cage, also a servant of Thomas Cornwallis, was appointed to Charles County Bench in April 1660, but sat for only six months as a Justice. Although Cage lived in Maryland for 18 years after his brief term at office, his participation was limited to infrequent jury duty.
