John Grant of Freuchie

JOHN GRANT, 2nd of Freuchie, called "the Red Bard" (Am Bard Ruadh). On 8 June 1483, on a precept from William Crawford of Federeth, he was infeft in the lands of Inverallan. On 16 September 1483 he received a gift from George, Earl of Huntly, of the lands of Kinrara and others, in the lordship of Badenoch, in liferent for man-rent service. On 4 January 1493-94 he had a confirmation of his lands, which were erected into the barony of Freuchie. John Grant, as early as 1488, must have acquired an interest in Urquhart, as in a dispute between the Laird of Freuchie and Alexander, Lord Gordon, the rents (270 merks) of the lands of Urquhart and Glenmoriston are stated, 28 January 1492-93, to be four years in arrear. He subsequently accepted from the Crown a lease of the lordship of Urquhart and Glenmoriston for five years from Whitsunday 1502 at the old rent of £100, of which, however, £20 a year was allowed to himself as his fee for keeping the castle. On 4 February 1498-99 the King bestowed on him the lands of Glencarnie and Ballindalloch, with the mills of the same. He purchased the lands of Nether Auchroisk in 1505 from John Nairn, the Baron of Cromdale. On 8 December 1509 he received a charter from King James IV of the barony of Urquhart. On 10 January 1512-13 he had a charter of sale from Alexander Gaderar, a burgess of Elgin, of the lands oi Auldcash, in the shire of Elgin. On All Saints' Day, 1513, Sir Donald Macdonald of Lochalsh, who had been proclaimed Lord of the Isles, invaded Urquhart, seized the castle, plundered the neighbourhood, and held the lands for three years.

John Grant died on 1 May 1528, having married (contract 16 September 1484), Margaret, 4th daughter of Sir James Ogilvy of Deskford. He left issue two legitimate sons and five daughters:-

    John Grant, 2nd of Freuchie was the son of John 'Mor' Grant of Freuchie, younger and Muriel Mackintosh.1 A contract for the marriage of John Grant, 2nd of Freuchie and Margaret Ogilvy was signed on 16 September 1484.2 He died on 1 May 1528.2

    John Grant, 2nd of Freuchie also went by the nick-name of John 'Am Bard Ruadh' Grant (or in English, ‘The Red Bard').2

John Grant, second of Freuchie, on 16th September, 1483, had a gift from George, Earl of Moray, of the lands of Kinrara and others, for manrent service. On 15th September, 1484, he entered into a contract of marriage with Margaret, daughter of Sir James Ogilvy of Desk- ford, binding himself to complete the marriage in eight days. He was infeft in half of the lands of Freuchie, Culfoichs, Congashes, and Glenlochy on 17th June, 1489, and in Tullochgorum and others on 20th June, 1491, as heir of his grandfather, Sir Duncan Grant. On 4th January, 1493, when in attendance at Court at Holyrood, he received a Crown charter from King James IV., erecting his lands of Freuchie, Culquheiches, Dailfoure, Auchynnegale, Connygais, and Glenlochy, in Inverness-shire, and other lands in Elginshire, into a free barony, to be called the Barony of Freuchie, for render- ing yearly three suits at the three head Courts of the shires in which the lands lie. Further, on 4th February, 1498, he received a charter granting him the lands of Glencairnie and Ballindalloch in feu, the lease in favour of his grandfather having terminated.

By Crown charter, dated 8th December, 1509, he was granted the lands and barony of Urquhart, lying on the west side of Loch Ness. Of these lands he had been Crown chamberlain for some years previous, as the rent rolls still preserved at Castle Grant shew. His last pub- lic act appears to have been the execution of Letters of Skins, drawn up at Delmorar, in the parish of Strath- awin, on 8th October, 1527, between the Clan Grant, on the one hand, and the Farquharsons on the other, resolv- ing to live and die in concord in future. He died on 1st May, 1528, leaving issue by his wife, Margaret Ogilvie,

He had a natural son, John mor Grant, who, on 8th De- cember, 1509, received a charter of the barony of Glenmorriston, and was the ancestor of that family.
