About John Holloway, Sr. of Cumberland Co. VA

John Holloway Sr. was born about 1696 in Essex Co., VA. The suffixes Sr., Senr., and "the Elder" appear with his name in period documents, though no middle name or initial is given (contrary to many online family trees). He married Hannah Spiers in Essex County in about 1715. Their son John Jr. was born before 12 Aug. 1716. The extended Holloway family seemed to have moved from Essex to Caroline County in the early to mid-1720s. John and Hannah then moved from Caroline to Goochland/Cumberland County in about 1745. This move seems to have been underway in 1744, when on 12 Dec., John Holloway and Hannah his wife acknowledged a deed to David Terrill in Caroline County Court. Most of the early deed books of Caroline County were destroyed by fire, making it difficult to determine the exact location of John and Hannah's property in Caroline County. Descendants of David Terrill locate his Caroline property in Golansville. On 20 Aug. 1745, Ann Mayo, executrix of William Mayo's estate, sold 1,200 acres in Cumberland County to John Holloway the Elder of Caroline County. The consideration was 64 pounds current money of Virginia. The property was on both sides of Soak Arse Run (to the west) and on both sides of the branches of Grooms Quarter Branch (to the east).

John Holloway (Sr.) of Southam Parish, Cumberland County made his will 13 Dec. 1757. He died before the will was probated on 24 Jul. 1758. To his son John's three orphan daughters, viz. Sarah, Phebe, and Drucilla, he bequeathed 275 acres on both sides of Soke Arse Creek and a Negro man; to son James the land and 1 Negro Cornwell; to son William the land and 1 Negro George; to son Samuel the land with the Plantation whereon John was then residing and 1 Negro girl; to granddaughter Mary Hudgens 1 Negro; to daughter Phebe Bradley 1 Negro woman Kate and 1 Negro girl Dinah; to daughter Eliza Hix 1 Negro woman Pegg; to daughter Mary Meador 1 Negro girl Gill; to daughter Jane Meador 1 Negro woman Phillace (Phyllis) ; to daughter Agness Turner 1 Negro boy Dick; to daughter Martha Hudgens 5 shillings sterling of England; to beloved wife Hannah all the rest of the estate. John appointed his wife Hannah and sons James and William Holloway as executors. He signed his will with a mark. Witnesses were John Bowden, John Hix, Charles Holland, and Mary Bowden (Cumberland County Will Book 1, 1749 – 1769: 153); see Reynolds, Cumberland County Will Books 1 and 2, 14).

John Holloway was a Virginia colonist.
John Holloway (Sr.) was born about 1696, probably in Essex Co., VA. He was the son of John Holloway and Rachel Unknown Holloway.

He married Hannah Spiers in Virginia about 1715. That date is an estimate based on his son's (John Jr.) birth c1716. John and Hannah probably married in Essex Co., somewhere close to Occupacia Creek. Record losses and presence of other John Holloway's makes it very difficult to pinpoint where John and Hannah lived before they settled in Caroline Co. sometime prior to 1737.

After John's father passed away, John and Hannah moved their family to then Goochland Co. (now Cumberland Co.). John purchased 1200 acres there in 1745. The land was on Soak Arse Creek (aka Bonbrook Creek). This area of Cumberland County is about three miles north of the city of Cumberland, driving north on Trent's Mill Road. This same area was also home for several other families from Caroline Co., including the Holland's and Meador's.

John wrote his will in 1757 and died about 6 months later. About half of his land had already been distributed to sons and sons-in-law and half was distributed by the will. John's inventory also included 11 named slaves. His widow, Hannah, never remarried and remained in Cumberland Co. until her death about 20 years later.
