He is recognized for Patriot Service. According to family stories, he was captured about the age of 10 and brought to the colony of Pennsylvania where he was sold into bondage. His first master was so cruel that he was removed and then bonded to a man from Guilford County, North Carolina. After he fulfilled his years as a bond servant, he married Sarah McAdow, the daughter of John and Ellen Nelson McAdow. He received a Revolutionary North Carolina Land Grant as the heir of Hugh Larkin. He moved with his family to what would become Dickson County, Tennessee. In 1803 when Dickson County was formed, he served as the first Trustee. The original home place land is still in the hands of the descendants of his oldest son, James. It has been designated a Tennessee Century farm. The cemetery is located on the original home place site.
