John Louis Moone came with his wife Jane Moon (Pope) of 3 years to the city of St. Louis, Missouri in 1845. He was a mechanical engineer and mathematician who was an early inventor and technical innovator in the development of the modern elevator. The Moon Elevator Co. was eventually bought up by the Otis Elevator Co.

He held official positions with the city of St. Louis, one such post being superintendent of the cities water works in the 1850s. He ran for harbor master of St. Louis in 1868 but it is unknown as to if he attained this position. He was superintendent of the machine shop, with the Aetna machine and foundry works one of the earliest such businesses west of the Mississippi.

He was also a Masonic brother in the Anchor Lodge of Good Templers. Good templars practiced the discipline of temperance in all things.
