About John Pettigrew

Most of what I know about John Pettigrew and his descendants comes via my cousin, Bev Kline. Below from Bev.

John Sr. was one of 5 sons of James and Jean Pettycrew, originally of Dauphin Co. PA. The whole family moved to Rockbridge Co., VA, 1793-94. For whatever the reason, John or his children changed the surname spelling to Pettigrew, apparently around 1810. His children all adopted that spelling. See specifics of his children below. Son Samuel remained and died in Rockbridge Co. Eli stayed until 1856 then moved to TN. Matthew early moved to the next county, Botetourt, and was a wealthy land and slave owner there. James moved to Campbell Co. VA in 1850.

John Pettigrew was born circa 1773 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He died in 1830. His wife, Mary Ward Pettigrew was born in 1773 and died in 1856.

Children:

  1. Samuel Pettigrew (1790-1842); spouse Hannah Gamble (1792-1864)
  2. Ann Pettigrew (1797-1847); spouse Peter Barger (1791-1855)

  5. Eli G. Pettigrew (1807- ? ); spouse Ann (Nancy) G. Morris (1808- ? )

  8. Andrew Jackson Pettigrew (1818- ? ); spouse Sarah Stephenson

John Petticrew was born in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County, PA. He married Mary Ward (1773 - ), daughter of George Ward and Mary Grier, in Dauphin County before they migrated to Rockbridge County, VA.

We don't know John's birthyear but it is not likely to be 1763. He was second son, after William, and his parents married 6 Sep 1762. John and Mary (Ward) married in Dauphin Co. PA and had their first son Samuel there. James Pettycrew and his children, and John Finley Petticrew moved to Rockbridge Co. VA 1793-94.

Who are the children of John Petticrew?

Who are the children of John Pettigrew (Petticrew) and Mary Ward? Samuel is documented in his grandmother's will (Warren County, OH). Ann Petticrew Barger appears to be their child as well.

Two other Pettigrews may be the children of John and Mary:

  1. George Washington Pettigrew, born 1801 in Rockbridge, Co., VA and died 1877 in Pendleton, Madison Co., Indiana.
  2. James Ward Pettigrew, born 1811 in Rockbridge, Co., VA and died 1895 in Campbell Co., VA.

Spelling of Pettigrew versus Petticrew

"...In the very early 1800's it appears that all of [the sons of James Petticrew d. 1799 Rockbridge] were spelling their surname "Pettycrew" (also evident in the Rockbridge Co. records). But then a strange change took place! John changed the spelling of his name and that of all of his family to PETTIGREW! This appears to have occurred sometime between 1810 and 1816. If you have a copy of the marriage bond for his daughter, Ann and Peter Barger, you will note that the scribe wrote "... we Peter Barger and John Pettycrew are held ...", but the document is signed by "Peter Barger" and "John Pettigrew"! This difference shows up on several of the marriage bonds in that period. A clear example is the consent, in 1817, by William for his dau Jane to marry David Parsons. He signed "William Pettycrew", and witnesses signed as "John Pettigrew", "George Parsons" and "Robert Pettycrew"..."

Are Andrew Jackson Pettigrew and Eli Pettigrew sons of John Pettigrew and Mary Ward?

John Pettigrew bought 28 acres in 1798 in the Natural Bridge district, and acquired another 38 adjoining acres by his father's will.John died 1830, intestate. When his son Eli finally sold the farm to Thomas L. Miller in 1856, the deed named two heirs/sons, Andrew J. and John.Descendants of these two men are uncertain about the identity of their parents, so this could be the proof they need.See the transcription of the deed in Note 1,below.

Named in the 1856 deed is Andrew J. Pettigrew as "one of the heirs of John Pettigrew decd."

Andrew J. Pettigrew appears in the grantor index for 6 Oct 1840 for a sale to John McCorkle (sheriff).(Deed Book V, pg 353.)After that, Andrew appears no more in Rockbridge Co.

Then appears an Andrew J. Pettigrew in the 1850 census in Nicholas County, VA/WV, in the household of Nancy Stephenson.Andrew J. Pettigrew married her daughter Sarah Stephenson.

In a bio about their son Elijah A. Pettigrew, it said that his father Andrew "grew up in Rockbridge County, that state, 'near the natural bridge,' and became a carpenter, later moving to Nicholas County, in the western part of the state, where he began working at his trade and where he married, established his home and spent the rest of his life."

So, with the 1856 deed, John Pettigrew's son Eli claims this Andrew J. as one of John's sons.

Eli also stated in the 1856 deed that John Pettigrew was "one of the heirs of John Pettigrew decd."I suggest that John Pettigrew of Whiteside Co. IL, was this heir of John Pettigrew decd., of Rockbridge County.
