Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bates-12316

There are no primary sources that have been posted here or elsewhere to show Joseph even existed, let alone had the wife & children that are attached.

He has erroneously been identified with Joseph Bates, the son of Joseph & Deborah Clapp Bates of Hingham, MA, who died as an infant in Nov. 1714. Until April of 2020, the infant death date was being applied to his grandfather, Joseph Bates, whose probate started the 18th of August, 1713, a full 15 months BEFORE his infant grandson died. Please see their respective profiles for links to sources & more details.

It was suggested that this Joseph died in 1747, again, without any source. However, the year 1747 is when Joseph Bates, husband of Deborah, made his Will & there is no Joseph Bates mentioned as a son. It's probable that researchers were suggesting he died before this will was written in 1747.[1]

There are descendants in this family that are deeply committed to having this Joseph be connected to the Bates family in Hingham. I suspect the reason for the deep commitment, is that the Bates lineage in New England has a clear ancestry that goes back 7 or 8 generations.... very neat & tidy. It could also be the connection to the common ancestry with president, Abraham Lincoln. Regardless, records do not lie.
