Joseph married Jane McGhie, the daughter of Alexander and Jane Milliken, at Co. Derry, Ireland. Joseph served in the Defense of Derry and died September 30, 1730, being buried on his farm in Lifford, Ballycogan Parish, County Donegal on 30 Sep 1730.

Joseph is the patriarch of the line that produces Capt. John and Jeanne/Jane. A daughter of Capt. John's son William (Margaret Caldwell) married James Richey Sr. Jeanne/Jane married Alexander Richey, and they were the parents of James Richey Sr. who married Margaret Caldwell (above). So, James Richey Sr. married the daughter of his first cousin William Caldwell.
