About Joshua T. Counts
They lived south of the Clinch River on land willed to himi by his father (the present site of Cleveland). Martha was a member of the Reeds Valley Baptist Church and is buried in the Ezekiel Counts Cemetery at Cleveland. Her premonition of approaching death and expressions of devout faith during her last illness were recorded in a small booklet probably published by her son Elijah. Her descendants treasure those memoirs today. During the Civil War he served several months in the Confederate Quartermaster Dept. at Bristol. He served as a deacon for many years [for the Reeds Valley Baptist Church] and represented his church as a messenger to the Washington District Association. Joshua was bedridden with rheumatism the last six year of his life.

Rebecca died in 1847 and she was buried in the Ezekiel Conuts Cemetery, next to Joshua's first wife. Joshua Counts got married a third time to Margaret Fannin. She was born on Jan. 20, 1820, the daughter of Frank Fannin and Matilda Fugate. Joshua and Margaret had seven children: Sarah, John Baptist Riley, Matilda, Christina, Aily, Nancy, and Louisa Ida. ———————————————-
John and Peggy Counts' two youngest sons stayed close to home. Joshua, born in 1801, lived on the south side of the river and had seventeen children by his three wives, Martha Kiser, Rebecca Kelly, and Margaret Fannin. He and his wives were members of the Reeds Valley Baptist Church, which met on his property. He was a great hunter, as evidenced by the many stories that were told by his offspring.
The youngest child, Ezekiel Counts, was born in
1805. He was a teacher and active in county affairs, serving as a justice of the peace, a member of the jury, and Commissioner of the Revenue.
Although he was strongly sympathetic to the North during the Civil War, at the age of 56, Ezekiel joined Company E, 21st Virginia Cavalry, commanded by his nephew, brother Joseph's son Ezekiel K. Counts.
Young Captain Zeke Counts was a zealous recruiter, sometimes using force to get his way.
