About Lieut. James Brown


John Browne and his wife Dorothy came from London on the Elizabeth in 1635. (Hotten 68) He was first at Plymouth, then at Taunton by 1643, and finally at Rehoboth by 1647. He should not be confused with another John Brown (of Watertown,MA), who also had a wife named Dorothy.

James Brown was a freeman of Plymouth 1636, Taunton 1643, Rehoboth 1650, and Swansea in 1670. He was a friend of the Rev. John Myles, who with Brown, was fined five pounds for setting up a Baptist meeting in Rehoboth. He was associated with Myles in organizing the Baptist Church in Swansea, being the first Baptist Church in Massachusetts.

He was deputy from Swansea 1666, 1669, 1671, 1683 and was governors assistant 1665, 1666, and from 1673-1683 when he declined to serve any longer. He went twice to King Phillip during th Indian War, but found Phillip "a very high not p'swadable to peace."

James and Lydia Brown are buried in Little Neck Cemetary in Riverside, RI.
