SETH ABBOTT (Ebenezer 3, George 2, George 1)

  • b. 23 Dec. 1739, baptized 9 Apr. 1740 Wilton Congregational Church.
  • d. 8 Oct. 1818 Cornwall, VT. where he is buried next to the Congregational Church.
  • m. 1st 26 June 1765 per Wilton church records, to Hannah Betts and they joined church in Wilton 27 Apr. 1766.
  • m 2nd. 18 Apr. 1776 Martha Bennett, and in 1782 "Martha Abbott" joined the Wilton Church. She removed to Licking County, Ohio with her daughter Susannah Wright and died out there. She is supposed to have taken the Abbott Bible with her. No marker was found in Ohio.

Seth Abbott fought in the Revolutionary War. The history of Norwalk states that Seth Abbott shot a British soldier near John Raymond’s house in Norwalk. The Connecticut Colonial Record for 10 of May 1792 shows that Seth Abbott's name was on a list of Norwalk inhabitants who claimed loss by enemy action in the Revolutionary war for £55-7-3.

He was appointed 20 Jan. 1790 to serve on a committee in Wilton to erect a new church. Before 1792 he and his family removed to Lee, MA where he and his wife Martha joined the Church of Christ 14 Oct. 1792.

In the records of the town of Lee for 30 Aug. 1792 Capt. Seth Abbott was chosen Grand juror and again on 7 Apr. 1794. In 1793 he was chosen Surveyor of the Highway. On 30 Mar. 1794 chosen a Field Driver, on 2 Mar. 1795 chosen selectman, and on 7 Nov. 1796 chosen one of a committee to look into building a new Town Meeting House.

On 25 Aug. 1799 the Church of Christ of Lee, Mass voted that Mr. Seth Abbott and wife Martha are recommended to the Communion of Watch of the Church of Christ of Cornwall, VT.

  • 4. Seth baptized 28 Mar. 1773. On 17 Oct. 1805 a meeting at his home was called to take measure to build a Baptist Meeting house at West Cornwall, Vt. He married Irene Abbott, a 2nd. cousin.

  • 1. + WILLIAM PITT b. Dec. 22, 1776.
  • 2. Susannah b. 7 Nov. 1778, baptized 4 Feb. 1779, d. 19 Jan. 1862. m. Simeon Wright who died 4 Sept. 1863 in his 61st year. A veteran of the War of 1812, as a marker on his grave stone states. Both buried the small Cornell cemetery between Johnstown and Alexandria, in Licking Co., St. Albans township, OH.
  • 3. Abijah b.14 Aug. 1780, baptized 22 Oct. 1780, m. 25 Nov. 1802. Polly Holley, Cornwall Vt.
  • 4. Lewis b. 1 June 1782, died age 5.
