About Lucy Blodgett Kirkpatrick
Lucy was a Salish-Kootenai or more probably Bitterroot Salish woman who lived on the Flathead Reservation
(Curator Note: The practice of "flat heads" among some Native American tribes, often referred to as "cranial deformation" or "head flattening," involved intentionally shaping a baby's skull by applying pressure to it using cradleboards or bindings, most commonly practiced by tribes in the Northwest Coast region like the Chinookan people, where a flat head was often seen as a sign of status or beauty; however, it is important to note that the "Flathead" tribe, also known as the Salish people, did not actually practice this custom despite their name which arose from early European observations of other nearby tribes who did engage in head flattening.)
The Flathead Indian Reservation is home to three tribes, the Bitterroot Salish, Upper Pend d’Oreille, and the Kootenai, and is centered on the Flathead Indian Reservation

Bitterroot Salish, or Flathead, originally lived in an area west of Billings, Montana extending to the continental divide in the west and south of Great Falls, Montana extending to the Montana–Wyoming border. From there they later moved west into the Bitterroot Valley.
By request, a Catholic mission was built here in 1841. In 1891 they were forcibly moved to the Flathead Reservation. The Bitterroot Salish are known by various names including Salish, Selish, and Flathead. The name "Flathead" was a term used to identify any Native tribes who had practiced head flattening. The Salish, however, deny that their ancestors engaged in this practice. Instead, they believe this name caught on because of the sign language used to identify their people: Pressing both sides of the head with your hands meant "we the people".
Biography:
Lucinda "Lucy" Decker was born on January 2, 1875, in Missoula County, Montana, to father Franklin "Frank" Decker, a white man born in Maine, and her mother Louise Eloise La Fontaine, also born in Montana.

Lucy is recorded in Indian census reports as being 1/4 blood, which would mean that one of her grandparents was a Salish Indian, but this information so far has been unavailable. Lucy had two older brothers and five husbands. Her husband James Gladstone adopted her three previous children by Ashbury Blodgett. It also appears that she adopted the Blodgett surname as a sort of middle name from that date forward.
According to the book Vanished in Hiawatha, author Carla Joinson suggests the following: Luch was Flathead (likely erroneous, see the discussion above), was admitted to Canton on March 4, 1911 (Paperwork shows she was admitted from the Flathead Indian School in Jocko, Montana, likely co-located with the Indian Agency), and was discharged on September 5, 1911. She was diagnosed with chronic depression, probably hysteria. (Manic depression with proximal hysteria is atypical depression and is a chronic syndrome that can be associated with personality traits like rejection sensitivity. Some symptoms of hysteria overlap with those of depression, including emotional outbursts, fainting, hallucinations, paralysis, and seizures.) However, for whatever reason, her stay in the Canton Asylum was of short duration, she was discharged on September 5, 1911 (See the patient file here: https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000212434754947)
It is entirely possible that Lucinda was a member of the Charlo band of the Bitterroot Salish, having lived her entire life in the Bitterroot Valley which was under the guidance of Chief Charlo and his insistence that his people be allowed to live there and that he never signed the treaty giving up the land of the Bitterroot Valley. Of that he appears to be truthful, it is reported that James Garland, the negotiator and future president, who, having failed to acquire Chief Charlo's agreement, simply forged his mark on the treaty.
- Charlo followed a policy of peace with the American settlers in Southwestern Montana and with the soldiers at nearby Fort Missoula.
- After the extermination of the buffalo herds, Charlo struggled for twenty years to maintain his people's economic independence in their homeland, the Bitterroot Valley. When Charlo's people were finally forced to remove to the Flathead Indian Reservation by the U.S. federal government, Charlo negotiated with retired general Henry B. Carrington to secure good farms and assistance for the Bitterroot Salish. Charlo spent the rest of his life attempting to hold the U.S. government accountable for fulfilling its promises and defending his people's rights to reservation land against white efforts to open the reservation for homesteading.
- In 1871, President Ulysses S. Grant issued an executive order to remove the Salish from the valley. When Congressman James A. Garfield arrived to carry out the order in 1872, the conflict over land claims nearly escalated into a military clash. The diplomacy of Charlo and other Salish leaders calmed the situation. Garfield negotiated an agreement through which part of the tribe moved to the Flathead Reservation. The rest of the people could remain in the Bitterroot if they became "land-holding U.S. citizens."] In the face of a military threat, Charlo refused to sign the agreement. To secure a signature, government officials recognized Arlee as chief. Charlo's signature was forged on the published version of the agreement, and Arlee led part of the tribe to the Flathead Reservation in 1873. Charlo still refused to leave, and he never forgave or spoke to Chief Arlee again.
