About Marcello Vincenzo Domenico Mastroianni
Marcello Vincenzo Domenico Mastroianni, Knight Grand Cross (28 September 1924 – 19 December 1996) was an Italian film actor. His honours included British Film Academy Awards, Best Actor awards at the Cannes Film Festival and two Golden Globe Awards.
Mastroianni was born in Fontana Liri, a small village in the Apennines, and grew up in Turin and Rome. Mastroianni was the son of Ida (née Irolle) and Ottone Mastroianni, who ran a carpentry shop.

Crowds mourn Marcello Mastroianni, the most famous movie actor in Italy
Rome (AP) - Marcello Mastroianni's body returned home to Rome on Saturday, passing through the heart of the city and some of its most romantic backdrops before thousands of fans attended a viewing to pay their respects to Italy's best-known actor.
His body was flown from Paris, where Parisians said their farewell Friday to the Italian who made that city his second home.
Mastroianni, 72, died Thursday of cancer.
The hearse carrying his coffin drove past the ruins of the Roman forum before winding to the top of the Capitoline hill, the seat of Rome's ancient and modern government.
The hill is a 10-minute stroll from one of the most enduring scenes in Mastroianni's 50-year acting career, Trevi Fountain, where Anita Ekberg lured him into the icy waters in La Dolce Vita.
Among the first fans to pay their respects were Premier Romano Prodi and Culture Minister Walter Veltroni.
Orchids from Sophia Loren and her producer-husband Carlo Ponti were among the floral decorations.
Mastroianni's wife, Flora Carabella, and their daughter, Barbara, greeted some of the mourners.
Barbara Mastroianni also attended the service in Paris.
Other women in Mastroianni's life who took part in the Paris memorial were his companion of some 20 years, Ann Maria Tato, French actress Catherine Deneuve, with whom Mastroianni had a daughter, and that daughter Chiara, also an actress.
Despite Mastroianni's affairs with other women, he and his wife stayed close.
"I understood Marcello; he understood me," his wife said in an interview published Saturday by Rome daily Il Messaggero.
"Only some habits changed; the affection and the esteem... they grew stronger through the years."
Public viewing was also scheduled for this morning before Rom Mayor Francesco Rutelli was to lead Italy's memorial service.
Mastroianni was to be buried in Rome's Verano cemetery.

Italians Pay tribute to actor Mastroianni
Rome (AP) - Italy said "Ciao, Marcello" at a memorial service Sunday recalling actor Marcello Mastroianni's joy for living and his humanity as much as his impact on Italian cinema.
After 30,000 admirers filed past Mastroianni's plain wooden coffin in City Hall on Saturday night and early Sunday, Rome Mayor Francesco Rutelli opened a memorial service in the square atop Capitoline Hill, the seat of Rome's ancient and modern government.
Sitting side by side in the front row in the cobblestone square designed by Michelangelo were widow Flora Carabella and Sophia Loren, the actor's partner in some of Italy's best-known postwar films, such as "Marriage Italian Style," "A Special Day", and "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow".
"There was a kind of chemistry between us that could not be compared with anybody else's," Loren told Associated Press Television after the half-hour service.
"Ciao, Marcello. I will never forget you. You will always be in my heart. I know that," she said.
After the memorial on a glorious springlike day after weeks of heavy rain, the coffin, which rested on a red carpet, was taken to Rome's Verano Cemetery for burial.
