Margaret Forrester, daughter of Sir James Forrester, Knt. and Elizabeth Erskine, was born between 1518 and 1520 (based on the date of the contract for her first marriage).[1]
In two separate accounts, The Scots Peerage treats Margaret as separate women, one, said to have died before 16 May 1562 as the widow of James Colville;[2] and another, the wife of Henry Livingston.[3] Although properly identified in Gibson's Lords and Lairds as the spouse of both men, sources are lacking.[4] In "Livingston Ancestry," Adrian Burke explains the problem and presents a solid case to show they are actually one and the same and prove Margaret's parentage.[5] It is summarized in the research note below.
Marriages and Children
Margaret married (1), as his second wife, Sir James Colville, Knt., by contract dated at Edinburgh, 21 May 1536.[1][2] They had:
- Alexander Colville born about 1537 (enrolled at St Mary's College in 1552);[6] married Nicola Dundas; died in May 1597; had issue.[7][8]
- Margaret Colville born about 1539 (father's death in 1540, and first marriage in 1553/4); married William Menteith, 7 March 1553/4; married James Cunningham before 14 May 1576; died after that date.[9][10]

"In 1562 Henry and his wife Margaret Forrester received two acres of land in Stirling, and in 1574 and his wife Dame Margaret Forrester borrowed money from the Duncanson sisters' grandfather, John Duncanson, minister of Stirling."[3]
Children of Henry Livingston by second wife Margaret Forrester:
- James (c. 1546-aft. Apr. 1565). when, as "James Lewyngstoun, son of Henry Lewyngstoun of Falkirk," he witnessed a Sasine.[18][19]

- Helen (c. 1556-aft. 1579). died after 22 Jan 1579/80 when parents resigned a tenement of land to her.[24]

Notes
Margaret Forrester was the widow of Sir James Colville of East \V"emyss,9 and as such the daughter of Sir James Forrester of Torwood and Garden by the latter's first wife, Elizabeth Erskine, opening the door to a legitimate descent from Robert III, King of Scots, who died in 1406.
