[edit] Biography
Infanta Maria Antonietta Ferdinanda was born at the Palacio de San Telmo in Seville, the youngest daughter of King Philip V of Spain and of second his wife, Elisabeth Farnese. As a daughter of the King of Spain, she was given the royal title of Infanta and held the style till her marriage. From her birth she was seventh in line to the Spanish throne, Spain allowing females to inherit the throne not observing the Salic law.
It was she was an Infanta of Spain that the young princess was allowed the style of Her Royal Highness. One of seven children, her siblings were to marry well:
Maria Antonietta with her eldest child Charles Emmanauel, c.1753
Born in the reign of her father Philip V, he would die in 1746 in a deep state of depression. The throne was inherited by her oldest half brother who succeeded as Ferdinand VI. Ferdinand had his step mother exiled from the court and with her went her old policies and de facto rule of Spain.
Maria Antonietta, as the youngest child, was the last to marry.
Her older half brother was ruling Spain as Ferdinand VI and tried to arrange a marriage with the Dauphin of France (c.1746) who was the widow of Maria Antonietta's older sister Maria Teresa. Louis XV declined the offer preferring the Saxon Princess Maria Josepha who was the mother of Louis XVI of France.
[edit] Marriage and consort
On 31 May 1750, at Oulx near Turin in Italy, Maria Antonietta married Prince Victor Amadeus of Savoy - the heir of King Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia and his wife Polyxena Christina of Hesse-Rotenburg. (later King Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia). Husband and wife would remain close for life. Maria Antoinietta was not fond of the dullness of the Sardinian court. Her sister's in law's, Princess Eleonora of Savoy, Princess Maria Luisa of Savoy (also declined by Louis XV) and Princess Maria Felicita of Savoy were a very pious set of people; they never married.
Due to her husband being the heir to the throne, he was titled the Prince of Piedmont; as such Maria Antonietta was created the Princess of Piedmont as his consort, with the style of Royal Highness. From her arrival at the court of Sardinia she was one of the most important people at the court and the most senior women, the last Queen consort having been the French Princess born Élisabeth Thérèse de Lorraine.
In later life, Maria Antonietta's daughter Princess Maria Anna would marry the only surviving son of Élisabeth Thérèse but have no children.
On the death of her father in law, Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia in 1773, she became the new Queen Consort of Sardinia. Despite only being the consort of her husband for nearly 12 years, she was one of the longest reigning Queens on Sardinia.
Her oldest so, future king of Sardinia, married the French princess Marie Clotilde de France, sister of Louis XVI of France; Maria Antonietta and her daughter in law would remain close till Maria Antonietta's death.
During her life in he adopted country, she lived in the Royal Palace of Turin where most of her children were born. She also used the Villa della Regina.
Maria Antonia died in the Castle of Moncalieri near Turin.
She is buried in the Royal Basilica of Superga.
