Marjorie Oberdorfer Bronner Pierson, a lifelong Syracuse resident until moving to Chicago at age 94, died Saturday, April 28, 2012, at her Chicago residence. She was born in Syracuse on December 27, 1909, to the late Emanuel and Rena Oberdorfer Bronner, a 1900 graduate of Syracuse University. Her paternal great-grandfather, Isaac Hirsch Bronner, was involved in the founding of Temple Concord. Marjorie's maternal grandfather founded Oberdorfer Foundry. Marjorie was valedictorian of the first class to graduate from Nottingham High School in 1927. She was salutatorian of the Syracuse University Class of 1931; a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies; chairman of Daily Services, Chapel Board; president of Pan-Hellenic Association; and a member of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. She was awarded a full tuition scholarship for graduate studies to the School of Education at New York University but returned to Syracuse upon the death of her mother. Marjorie and her husband Ted were founders and first presidents of the first parents association at Syracuse University. Marjorie served as president of the Syracuse section of the National Council of Jewish Women, finance chairwoman of the Corinthian Club, officer of the Pastoral Care Committee for the Syracuse Area InterReligious Council, treasurer and longtime member of the Onondaga Pastoral Counseling Center, and a volunteer for the Syracuse Jewish Federation. Among the awards she received were the Hannah G. Solomon Award, Syracuse Section, NCJW, 1978; the Jewish Family Service Humanitarian Award; and the OPCC "Better Lives" Award, May 10, 1990. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Theodore Pierson, in 1983 and daughter Rena Pierson Dankovich in 1975. She is survived by her son, Edward (Elaine Grauer), and her grandsons, Alan Pierson and Louis Dankovich IV. Services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Monday, May 14, 2012, at Temple Concord, 910 Madison Street, Syracuse, NY. Friends may visit with the family on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m., prior to the service, at the temple. Burial will be in the Temple Concord section at Woodlawn Cemetery.
