When 12 to 14 years of age, she was with many others, forcibly taken, carried on board a ship & brought to Pennsylvania. She was sold as a servant to Caleb Pusey, near Chester & served her time out.
"Stolen Children of Scotland" Mary Royal taken in 1697 and from Scotland. I don't believe they were of the Quaker faith when they were taken, but were converted or educated in that faith by the Quaker family's that they lived with and served. One of the termsof the indenture was that the master was to educate the indentured servant. The majority of the children that were kidnapped were between the ages of 8 and 16 years old.
Mary Royal and Alexander Stewart's indenture was sold in Chester Co., PA and George Slater (Slaitor) was indentured to John Lambert in Burlington Co., NJ.
Records for the kidnapped children can be found in the County Court records of the respective County their indentures were sold in. In my case, Chester Co., PA and Burlington Co., NJ. Strange as it may seem, the word kidnap originated in Scotland. I wonder if it came about because of the "Stolen Children" that we now claim as our ancestors.
At the Court of Quarter Sessions in Chester Co., PA 3 October 1693, the following children were brought to have their terms of indenture secured. All were to be released upon the age of 21 years. Alexander ROSS, Daniel MacDANIEL, James HERCULES, George LACEY, Alex MECANY, Magnis SIMSON, James CANIDE and James DIVER
At court held in the 9th month 1695--Andrew FRAISOR, James JOHNSON, Henry NICKOLS, Robert FLATT, John MacKELLFRAY and John ROBINSON At court held 14 7mo 1697--Mary ROYLE, John WILLIAMSON, both being bought by Caleb Pusey, a Quaker miller, Daniel CORMUTT, James BRUISS, Adam BEAKLY or BEATTY, Peter HOOD, John SLEDER, John MacKLENE or MACKLE, Hugh WOOLSON, Hugh REESE, William HUNTLEY or SUNKLY, George PRUISS, George GREEN, John MARTIN, George ROBERTSON, Robert JACK, Thomas TAYLOR, Mary FINLEY of Sinkler, Margaret CONNER, John ROBERTSON, James MASTERTOWNE, Emmole or Emmald DOELL, Alexander MOORE, George LINN, Robert MERSCER or MERSEER, John STELLER of Scotter, Magnis TAITE, John SLAITER, Andrew LEWIS and Alexander NICKLES or NISKLOR.
At court held in Burlington Co., NJ 21 July 1697--Daniel CAMRONE, George DOUGLAS, George SLAITER, James HADDYARD and John YOUNG. At court held in Chester Co., PA 5 October 1697--Daniel MacKINTOES, William CLOWNEY, Margaret MONGEY, William MacDANIELL, Elizabeth ALLEN, Alexander STEWART, Ann BEAN, Thomas HARPER, Andrew NORVILLL, John ROBINSON, Robert SINKLER and William MAUROE.
At court held in Chester Co., Pa 14 December 1697--terms for these children was begun from the seventh month (September), when it was thought they entered the Colonies--thirteen children's indenutures were sold. Alexander MacKENER had his term extended because he ran away from his master and tried to kill himself.
Alexander MacLEENE was reassigned to a man in New Castle Co., DE--John MASTON, John FREEZER, Jenneth HOOSEEK who was sick, Robert GIBB, Alexander FREEZELL, george CLAUSTON or BLOUSTON, Robert SCOTT, John HUGHES, John GREENWATER, John DAVIDSON, Elizabeth TROTTEN or TROTTER and Barbara THOMPSON, whose master had great expense for her "cure", the court ordered 2 years to be added to her time.
All of the above children were imported by either James or Maurice Trent of Leith, Scotland. The following children were brought before the court in Chester Co., PA in 1696. It is not sure if they were imported by the above Trent, although the names are similar--Saundy HUNTER, Jean GORDON, William JOHNSTOWNE, George ROBINSON, Thomas ROBBINSON, Thomas BULLEN, Margaret CHAMBERS and William BRUISE or BRUCE.
At court held in Bucks Co., PA in November 1697--Neal GRANT and John DUNCAN.
Unfortunately not all of the above children became Quakers. In fact, only a handful of them did-- Mary Royal, Alexander Stewart, George Slater and Alexander Ross are the only ones that I know were Quaker converts, there could have been others.
I hope the above list will help some of you with your research. These are the only names that I have, but I am sure that there are more. If you suspect that your ancestor may have been one of the "Stolen Children of Scotland", you may want to check out the Quarter Sessions court records in the county that you suspect your ancestor first settled. James and Maurice Trent seem to be the only ones importing the children at that time 1693-1698 into New Jersery and Pennsylvania.

Mary Royall, born in Scotland?[967]; died Bef. 20 May 1749 in probably Nottingham, Chester Co., PA[968].
The following is quoted from page 50 of "Nicholson Family History" (1970) by Caroline Nicholson Jacob (1891-1991) of Round Top, Chester County, Pennsylvania:
Jeremiah Brown, father of Patience, married a Mary Royal or Royle who had a romantic rather than a distinguished background. According to the story she told her children she had been kidnapped in Scotland when she was only a girl in her early teens and had been taken as an indentured servant to America where she served out her term in the household of Caleb Pusey in Chichester in a house that has been recently restored as a museum piece.
She married as soon as her term of service was over; her husband [William Coles] died and she married Jeremiah Brown and thus became the mother of Patience and the great-grandmother of Rhoda Holaday who walked by the covered wagon over the mountains to Indiana.

May have been abducted along with her mother at age 12 or 14 in Scotland and put on a ship to the USA. Might have been an indentured servant (along with her mother); to Caleb Pusey in Pennsylvania. After her "term" as a servant was up, she married William Cole(s). She was widowed from him, then married Jeremiah Brown.

The following conflates (apparently incorrectly) Mary with Maria of the Royall family of New England, in contradiction to many secondary sources that place her birth in Scotland, and her immigration to America as the result of her being kidnapped and indentured. The source "The New-England Royalls", which seems to cover that family rather thoroughly, doesn't assert her as being the same person who ended up in Pennsylvania. Until definitive (primary or reliable secondary source) proof does show up supporting her placement with the family of William and Mary Royall of Dorchester, I'm going to separate her from that family. -Ben M.
