Origin
In Patton Lineages (2003), Agricola states [1], "Matthew Patton was born at sea in 1705 according to family tradition; said to be a son [or brother] of John Patton, of Covenanter stock, native of northern Ireland".
One of Agricola's sources for that statement was Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania (1911) which says "The American progenitors were Matthew and John Patton of Covenanter stock, brothers, natives of Northern Ireland". [2]
Peters Township and Fort Loudoun
He and his brother, John, came to Peters Township, Pennsylvania as early as 1735. [2]
He appears on the tax list of Peters Township in 1751 [3], 1753 [4], 1763 [5], 1764 [6], 1765 [7], 1766 [8], 1767 [9], and 1768 [10].
In 1756, Captain John Armstrong built a fort on Matthew's farm in order to protect the settlers against attacks from the Native Americans. [11] The fort was named Fort Loudoun, after the Earl of Loudoun, John Campbell. [11]
In a letter written 19 November 1756 to Governor William Denny, John Armstrong wrote about Matthew's farm [11]:
According to the yr Honour’s Orders I have carefully examined Barr’s place, and could not find in it a proper Situation for a Fort, the soil being too Strong to admit the Ditch, and the Spot it self, Overlook’s by an adjoining Hill, but has fixed on a place in neighborhood near Parnell’s Knab where one Patton lived, the Spot I hope will be very agreeable to your Honour and to Mr. Myer, and as its near the New Road, will make the distance from Shippensburgh to Fort Lyttleton two Miles Shorter than by McDowel’s.
I’m making the best preparation in my power to forward the New Fort, as well as to prepare the Barracks, &c, all the others for the Approaching Winter. Yesterday the Escort of one hundred men returned from Lyttleton who left the Chattle &c, safe there and to-day we begin to Digg a Cellar in the New Fort; the Loggs & Roof of a New House having there been Erected by Patton before the Indians burn’s his Old One. We shall first apprise this House, and then take the benefit of it, either for Officers Barracks or a Store House, by which means the Provisions may the sooner be mov’d from this place (McDowell’s Mill) which at present divides our strength.
The British abandoned the fort in 1765, and Matthew reclaimed his farm. [11]
Marriage
He married Elizabeth. [12]
Children
There are seven children mentioned in his will.
- James Patton
- Robert Patton
- Samuel Patton
- John Patton
- Matthew Patton
- Thomas Patton
- Sarah Patton.
He had 8 children? [2]
Highlights from his will [12] include:
- "Matthew Patton of Peters Township County of Cumberland and Province of Pennsylvania"
- "my wife Elizabeth"
- "I also give and bequeth to her my said wife my negro wench Sally"
- "my son James Patton"
- "my son Samuel"
- "my son Robert"
- "my son John"
- "my son Matthew"
- "my son Thomas"
- "my grand daughters Elizabeth Wilson and Mary Wilson"
- "my daughter Sarah"
- "I appoint my friend James M. Donell to be overseer of my will"
- "my last will [...] set my hand and seal this sixteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy six"
- "on the 7th day of Jany. 1778 the testament & last will of Matthew Patton decd. was legally provided"
Slaves
- His will mentions a "negro wench Sally". [12]
- In the 1766 tax list of Peters Township he is listed as having 1 servant [8], and in the 1767 and 1768 tax lists he is listed as having 1 negroe [9] [10].
Research notes
Disputed Parents
In the book Patton Lineages [1], David Agricola writes:
As we have discussed above it is likely that his father was the John Patton who died in Antrim Twp. in 1741.
Matthew was originally attached to John Patton (abt.1665-), but that John does not seem to fit the description of the John in the Patton Lineages book.
He also had a Matilda Ann Wideman attached as his mother. A Matilda Ann (Wideman) Patton did exist, but she was born in 1868 and was married to Matthew L. Patton (1865-1951).
Middle Name "Leander"
Various trees online have his middle name as "Leander". While there are various Matthew Leander Pattons that exist, I haven't seen any records where this Matthew has a middle name.
"Old Matt" Nickname
He has the nickname "Old Matt" in various family trees online. Where did this come from?
Other Notes
The earliest records of Pattons in Pennsylvania are of Matthew and John, "brothers from Covenanter stock, who settled in the North of Ireland then came early in the 18th century and settled in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania". It is reported that these Pattons are decendents of the Covenanter martyr, Mathew PATOUN of Newmilns, Scotland who was executed in Glasgow public square in 1666.
Not to be confused with Matthew Rogers Patton m: Elizabeth Jane (Moore) Barber
He is often confused with another Matthew Patton and Elizabeth (a likely relative) who lived in South Carolina
Abstract:
Matthew Patton, born ca. 1700-05, probably in Ulster (northern Ireland), emigrated to Pennsylvania. He received several Royal land grants from the Province of North Carolina for property then situated in Anson County, North Carolina.
He married Elizabeth (surname unknown).
Matthew died in 1754 and Elizabeth died after 1754.
Their children were
James (1723-1767) who married Prudence Farrell;
Mary (1727-1808) who married William Hagins;
Elizabeth (b. 1727) who married Robert McClanahan;
Robert (1737-1807) who married Sarah (Strain?);
Matthew (ca.1739-1779) who married Rebecca Barnet;
Thomas (ca.1741-1780);
Samuel (ca.1747-1805) who married Mary (?); and
Lilley (Lillis) (ca.1745-1830) who married James Smith.
John Patton, progenitor of the York County Pattons, was born either in Scotland or in Northern Ireland about 1705-1710. After living for a time in Pennsylvania, he settled in Augusta County, Virginia, before 1750. He signed his last will and testament on January 2, 1756; the will was probated on March 16, 1757 a few weeks following his death. In this document he mentions his wife (perhaps his second wife and perhaps not the mother of all his childfen), several older children who had been "portioned off" earlier, and 5 younger children who were: William, James, Margaret, Isabell, and Agness, all 5 of whom we were under the age of 21 years. His executors were the widow, Agness; Mathew Lyle; and Alexander Miller. Among the children already portioned off was his son, John, Jr., perhaps the oldest child of the family.
