Name Variation

Nicholas Bourgeois Grandjean was also found as Jacob Bourgeois dit Grandjean. It was thought for a long while that his surname was Bourgeois, but recent research by those more learned than I, has established that his son was baptized with a surname of Bourgeois AFTER the death of Nicholas, as that name had more prestige. It appears that the Bourgeois were a prominent medical family. It does seem that paid off as that son became a surgeon for the King. It is possible that his father was named Jacques but we have no original documents to support that.
