About Paul Ullman
- Paul Ullman was born in Paris to parents from the United States who emigrated to France in 1905. He was raised in an artistic environment: his mother, Alice Wood, was a writer, his father, Eugène, was a painter, and his brother Allen, a sculptor. They lived above the Dôme and mingled with the Montparnos. At the outbreak of World War I, the family moved to the United States. In 1919, Paul Ullman returned to Paris with his brother and attended the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. He studied painting and frequented Parisian museums. He traveled to Italy and Holland, where he discovered the Flemish masters, then returned to the United States and settled on a farm. During World War II, from the United States, he joined a relief and aid organization. In 1943, he returned to France and formed an active resistance network between London and Paris. On August 25, 1944, while on his last mission, Paul Ullman was shot by SS soldiers at the Swiss border. His paintings are held at the Oran Museum in Algeria, the Metropolitan Museum of New York (a landscape of Paimpol), and the Carnegie Institute dedicated an exhibition to him after the war.
- On April 14, 1944, he was parachuted into France. Upon arrival, he went to the Barbier residence at 41 Grande Rue, Valentigney (Doubs), where he was to stay. That same evening, the Gestapo came to take the Barbier's son. Ullman tried to leave the house through the back door. He was killed by the Gestapo as he climbed over a wall to escape.
