Biography
Peter Glanfield sailed from England to the Maine Colony in 1642. Like many other early Maine settlers, he hailed from southwest England, specifically Cornwall. The Visitations of Cornwall note that the Glanville family of that county was sometimes styled Glanfield in the sixteenth century. Based on naming conventions, he is the second son of John Glanfield, and named after his mother's father Peter Hallamore. [1]
Peter was a second son of a second son, and given the primogeniture laws in England, his prospects were few. Fortunately for him, he had an opportunity to sail for the New World.
His exact whereabouts for the first few years after his arrival are not known. He is listed as a land owner in Dover tax rolls for 1663, however, he was listed as being öf Isles of Shoals".[2]
Later he lived at Old Kittery and finally at Portsmouth.
Peter may have spent his time on the Isles of Shoals working at the fish salt works. This is where the catches were brought and prepared for shipment to England and elsewhere across the Atlantic.
He was a tailor by trade. Where he learned this trade is not known. He most likely had the skills when he arrived. Besides this profession, he also had some time for other pursuits. He served as constable in 1666 and was fined in the Maine court for forcibly evicting William Pitts but, he sustained in jailing him. Also in 1666 Peter was an appraiser for the Rev. Joseph Hull's estate.
The next year he bought two acres of land near the Portsmouth meeting house where he apparently lived until going to Salem to live with his son. He sued a Mr. John Moor in 1668 for stealing some cloth, calling him out in court as " an old cheating rogue" . The court ruled for the plaintiff and Peter to be paid 2 shillings for damages.[3]
He appears to have been very outspoken in his opinion of the rulers of the province, so much so that he was fined for what he said against Gov. Cranfield.
On April 21, 1670, his neighbor William Palmer granted Peter 12 acres and entrusted his three year old daughter Rachel into his care to be brought up:
