About Pte. George Thomas Riley
George Thomas Riley was born at Eltham in the Taranaki region of New Zealand's North Island on 29 March 1895. His parents were William George Riley (O'Riley) and Elizabeth Alice Riley (née Hawke) who had married in Eltham on 8 February 1890. William travelled to visit family in South Africa, and died there on 4 December 1896. Elizabeth had travelled separately to South Africa, and arrived just five days before William died. She returned to New Zealand and on 10 January 1900 remarried to John Wittington. George was a farmer before he joined the Wellington Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, during World War I. He was killed in action at Ypres on 31 July 1917. 22-year-old George is remembered on Panel 29 of the Messines Ridge New Zealand Memorial. Bio by Debbie McCauley (17 January 2024).
