Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum - The Yismach Moshe

Grandfather of SCS Moshe Teitelbaum (1759-1841) (Hebrew: משה טייטלבוים), also known as the Yismach Moshe, was the Rebbe of Sziget-Ujhely, (Maramarossziget / Satoraljaujhely) in Hungary. According to Löw, he signed his name "Tamar", this being the equivalent of Teitelbaum, which is the Yiddish for "palm-tree" (compare German "Dattelbaum").

An adherent of the Polish Hasidic Rebbe, the Chozeh of Lublin, Rabbi Teitelbaum was instrumental in bringing Hasidic Judaism to Hungary. He was initially opposed to Hassidism, but his son-in-law introduced him to the Chozeh of Lublin, and he soon became an adherent to Hassidism.[citation needed] *(Dezsö Schön, 1997)

Teitelbaum officiated as rabbi, first in Przemyśl, and later in Sátoralja-Ujhely, to which latter place he was called in 1809. In Ujhely he founded a Hasidic congregation which was independent of the Galician leaders.

In 1822 Teitelbaum was suspected of having supplied amulets to certain Jewish culprits who had been cast into prison for libel, in order to assist them in escaping. When called upon to vindicate himself he declared that the amulets in question served only as substitutes for the mezuzah and that their only purpose was to protect their bearers against demons.

Teitelbaum enjoyed an enviable reputation, even R. Moses Sofer paying him homage. He authored the works Heishiv Moshe ("Moses Responded", a collection of responsa), Tefillah le-Mosheh, (commentaries on the Psalms), and Yismach Moshe ("Moses Rejoiced", 1849; 2d ed. 1898, containing homilies on the Torah), and he is commonly called by the title of the latter.

His descendants became leaders of the communities of SIGHET and SATMAR.

משה טייטלבוים - רב ומחבר ומיסד החסידות בהונגריה וראש למשפחת טייטלבוים. המשפחה מתיחסת לרמ"א (הקדמת "ישמח משה" לויקרא, סיגעט תרנ"ח), וממנה יצאו הרבה רבנים וצדיקים. ר' משה טייטלבוים נולד בשנת 1769 בעיר פרעמסלא, בהגהותיו על יו"ד שנדפס בווילנא תרנ"ה סימן שמ"א הוא חותם "משה ספרעמסלא". נפטר כ"ח תמוז תר"א (1841).

ראשית למודו הייתה אצל דודו ר' יוסף, רב בעיר קאלבסוב. למודיו כללו גם את שער היחוד מחובות הלבבות. למד בישיבת ר' יעקב יצחק החוזהמלובלין ובן דודו ר' אריה ליב הלוי הרב בסטרינאב מחבר דרישת ארי על אה"ע. ר' משה מביא ממנו חדושי תורה בהקדמת ספרו ישמח משה. בשנת תקמ"ד או תקמ"ה (1785) נתקבל לרב בעיר שינאווע, ובשנת תקמ"ח (1808) נתקבל לרב באויהעל. היתה לו שם ישיבה, והרביץ שם תורה קרוב לל"ג שנה.

שמו נתפרסם כגדול בתורה וחסיד בקדושה וטהרה, כי היה עוסק בנגלה ובנסתר. במות רבו ר' יעקב יצחק מלובלין והמגיד מקאזניץ ר' ישראל בן שבתי נהרו אליו החסידים ובקשו ממנו לתת להם קמיעות לרפואה, והוא נענה להם. גם בעל חתם סופר פנה אליו בחלות בנו ר' אברהם שמואל בנימין בעל כתב סופר. היה נקרא בפי מעריציו בשם "סבא קדישא".

בשנת 1822 העלילו עליו כי נתן קמיעות ליהודים שנדרשו לעבודת הצבא, כדי שיעלה בידם להשתחרר, אך הוא לא נענש בשביל כך. שמו נתפרסם בין הגויים כבעל מופת, ומספרים כי קשט ליש בלומדו בגימנסיה באויהעל, הביאה אותו אמו לפני הרב ר' משה לברכו, וקרא עליו את הפסוק "נתתה ליראך נס להתנוסס מפני קשט סלה" (תהילים ס' ו'). נבואתו נתקיימה, כי נבחר לנשיא הונגריה במלחמת החירות נגד אוסטריה בשנת 1848.
